International Service
The International Service Committee is comprised of the following programs and leaders:
Youth Exchange: Wayne Wunderlich, Andrea Seeley
- This is without a doubt, our most active program with one in-bound and usually multiple outbound high school students. It is year ‘round activity.
Eyeglasses/Clinic: Larry Norwood
- Our Club first participated in 1988 with Dr. Mike McManus, a former member and local ophthalmologist, supporting his efforts in eye missions to Honduras. Dr. Bob Foote, also a former member and past president of our club a local optician, worked with Mike and has carried on the program in Honduras since. Bob has also expanded the work of the mission to Peru. Members of our club have joined Bob on some of these missions an opportunity usually available to anyone interested. The mission trips are usually about 8 to 10 days in January, February or March. We collect glasses for refurbishing and use in the program and also provide a $1000 stipend annually.
World Service: Larry Graves
- This program has been quite varied over the years with no thread binding it together. Our club has participated in a variety of programs including wheelchairs for Mexico, housing in Mexico, pediatric ICU monitors in Peru, Shelter box housing in Haiti, and bio-sand water filters on at least two different occasions. Our club partners with another club somewhere in the world, monies are raised which are generally matched by the District and/or the International providing a great multiplying punch for the effort. On site visits and or work is often possible for those interested in hands-on experience.

Eye Glasses Project, La Esperanza, Honduras. A project begun in 1982 by Dr Mike McManus, Ophthalmologist, Traverse City. Vision and dental services and glasses donated to the Honduran community. We provide used glasses to be cleaned, catalogued, and reissued. He partnered with VOSH and the Lions Club of Esperanza.

5 couples from our Club joined the Eyeglasses group on a 10 day trip to Esperanza.

(Henry also gathered 5.5 tons of medical equipment from Leelanau Memorial Hospital upon its closing and Paul Oliver Hospital in Frankfort which was delivered to two small nursing homes in Montana)

The initial goal of $6000 was reached before Christmas. Two fetal monitors were purchased, a third was donated by the supplier who was impressed by the effort, and a fourth was donated thru friends of Henry in Texas. Total raised was about $23,000.

$2875 from Suttons Bay Congregational Church members plus about $2000 from our Club plus 65c on the dollar from District equals about $8000 buying 8 Shelterboxes serving about 80 people.
Each 49 gal box contains: 10 person tent, vinyl insulated sleeping mats and lightweight thermal blankets, wate purification tablets or kit, water storage container, two collapsible, plastic water carriers, collapsible trenching shovel, rope, mosquito netting, 10 PVC ponchos, 10 heavy plastic bags, tool kit, multi fueled cook stove, eating utensils, plates and cups, children’s activity kit and school supplies.

Biosand filters: Thomazeau, Haiti. NGO: Pure Water for the World. We contributed about $1500. Partnered with TC Noon Club, Scarlsdale Rotary Club, Elk Rapids Rotary Club and a couple of private donors. Education of necessity of clean water, education on proper operation and maintenance of the biosand filters, installation of system, and follow up in the field to make sure it was being used properly. Cost per installation: about $180. Goal: 4 schools and 250 households in Haiti.

Project resulted in over 400 installations. Run away inflation, insufficient materials, and political turmoil has disrupted the program. The sponsoring organization which is centered in Haiti has left the capital city due to uncontrolled crime and gang violence and relocated their headquarters to Limonade.
