The Rotary River

 

The Rotary Youth Exchange Students led our weekly meeting: Jaeven Aylor, Lili Konyova, Sky Harsch, Junior Matsuda, Paige Klein & Sarah DeBrot

 

Guests included: Beth Beaman's son, Jacob, District Governor-Elect, Tom Schmitt, and Dennis Sikkenga's daughter, Gracie as well as Mary Kaminski. Tom Schmitt thanked the club for the welcome and praised the students from Baker for their commitment to helping others. He also commended the club for their leadership in Youth Exchange.

Sky Harsch reported on the YES's weekend at Kettenun where they learned a lot about their upcoming year abroad. The inbounds participated in a service project and visited the local YFCA.

 

Darrel Cardy submitted a request for $1,500 to the Rotary Foundation to support the Meals for Wheels programs. Kathy and Darrel will defend the grant on 5/14.

Kathy Jacobson announced that the Eagles installed a new sond system that our club helped to support; it is a welcome addition to our meetings.

Our Account Balances: $20,758.41(C) and $29,067.96 (S).

 

John Truxall announced the highway clean up for Thursday at 5pm. Shelly Williams from the WL Community Library shared some upcoming events including a Carnival for kids, a Money Smart Week sponsored by HarborLight Credit Union. Amy VanLoon reminded members about the upcoming Legislative Luncheon set for Monday, April 20th  at Alcoa, Howmet Plant 10 at 11:30am. Cost is $24/person and features Bill Huizenga. Beth Beaman invited members to the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit's show on Friday, April 17 at 7:30pm at the Howmet Playhouse. Golf Outing set for June 9th, more information to come. Lili Konyova is looking for odd jobs to do: babysitting, yard work, etc. to help offset the cost of her West Coast trip this spring. Call her at 231.571.6262.

 

50-50 Drawing winner was Sky Harsch and she donated the money back to the entire Youth Exchange program. Way to go!

 

Steve Mayberry sponsored the program this week and the guest speakers were from the Baker College Rotaract Club: Danielle Woodring, Rodney Savidge, Megan Megan Malwits.  They recentrly returned from a trip to Honduras where they installed biosand water filters in several locations in the mountains. They showed pictures of the families who received the filters and talked about the challenges of living in the remote areas. They appreciated the support they received from the Montague Whitehall Club and said the experience was life-changing for their group and that they hope to go back again. They lived by the phrase: Changing Lives, Making a Difference.
