Our next committee meeting for the Permanent Endowment Fund as part of the Service Fund will be at 10:45 for an hour on April 20th before the regular meeting, at Wells Fargo on the third floor. We have a very engaged committee, planning every step and aspect of this permanent fund. Thank you to those Rotarians who are working diligently on this project.
The Flight Lite planning committee has now appointed heads for each of the needed areas to be filled to make the event successful. Put it on your calendars now to attend: September 7, and it will take the place of our regularly scheduled meeting that Friday at a later time in the afternoon and early evening. This year's event will breathe new life into our major fundraising activity!
The memorial service for James Way, our Rotarian who passed away last week, will be at the Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd, on Saturday, April 14. Viewing will be at 4:30 and the service will be at 5:00 pm. A reception will be held at MacKenzie Senior Living Center at 6:30 pm that same evening. Our thanks to Dwight Dumler who took special care to be sure James made it to our meetings as often as he could. James loved Rotary and was always interested in attending. We will miss him.
Our next social - Rotary on the Rocks - will be held at Smiling Toad Brewery - Rotarian Biff Morehead's down-home brewery off of 8th Street, on May 3rd from 4:30 to 6:30. Biff may even come up with a Downtown Rotary Club brewski for us to sample. Be there to enjoy brews, bites, and belches.
Exciting plans are in store for southwest downtown Colorado Springs, as told to us by Jeff Finn of Nor'wood Investments. Same for UCCS when Chancellor Venkat Reddy spoke to us week before last. "Tis a privilege to live in Colorado".
Late Breaking News Alert! Colorado Springs is recognized as the 2nd most desirable place to live in our country as ranked by US News and World Report. Woohoo, we all know it and now the rest of the world knows it. Get ready for more cars on our streets as people come here to live, work, and play.
Dennis Shoemaker shared the name and nationality of our newest exchange student who will be hosted by our club for school year 2018-2019. Her name is Noa and she is from an area of Paris, France. Parlez-vous Francais? Thank you to Cass Daley and to Josh and Molly Slate for being hosts to her.
Donna Dell'Olio is organizing the Friendship Exchange between our club and the club in Bisceglie, Italy, and it should be a showstopper of an exchange! They will be visiting our club from August 13 until August 18 and we will be visiting them in early November, just in time for the olive oil harvest. We need host families in August so sign up and learn about this very interesting part of Italy from other Rotarians and better yet, sign up to go with us to their part of the world! I can't wait to go with the other Rotarians from our club and enjoy each other, Italy, and the Bisceglie Rotarians. The food and wine will be extraordinary, I'm sure, as assuredly the memories that will be created when we tour around will be. Buon Viaggio! Some of us who are going are: Cass Daley and Pat, Donna Dell'Olio and Greg, Carol Bach and Allen, John Buckley and Melinda, and Karen and I. I may be missing other travelers on the trip who have already expressed interest in going so I apologize to you.
Our exchange student, Romi Bogarova, joined Rotarian Dennis Shoemaker with wife Liz and grandson Maciu for a Spring Break trip to see the western United States and some of our national parks -- Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, and Bryce Canyon.

Leaving on Saturday, March 24th, they traveled first for an overnight in Durango with a visit the next morning to Mesa Verde National Park and The Four Corners. On the way to their next overnight in Flagstaff, they stopped at Monument Valley in Southern Utah. The next national park was the grand-daddy of them all -- Grand Canyon National Park. Next was an overnight in Page, AZ with a visit the next day to Bryce Canyon NP with an overnight just outside. They had hoped that a visit to Arches NP would be possible on the way to an overnight in Grand Junction, but the lines to get into the park were to long. Romi met up with fellow exchange student Luce Villemin (France), hosted by the Grand Junction Horizon Sunrise Rotary Club. Romi and Dennis enjoyed a breakfast meeting last Thursday with that club. Overall, a wonderful trip, seeing more of America in five days than many Americans see in a lifetime.
Our Club has decided to establish an ongoing program for sharing Foundation Recognition Points (FRPs) to encourage contributions to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and to help members become Paul Harris Fellows or to obtain multiple Paul Harris levels. See attached documents.
This is the way the program will work:
Members who have FRPs will be asked to donate all or a specified part of their points.
The donated points will establish a pool available for transfer to other members who are contributing to TRF
Members contributing to TRF may choose to use points to help them become a PHF or advance to the next PHF level
The approach essentially functions as a clearinghouse to connect members with points to members who wish to use points in connection with contributions.
