“Effective Outreach Approaches to Marginalized Communities”
Julissa is considered one of the visionary and trailblazing leaders in public health in the State of Colorado and has served in significant leadership capacities in numerous capacities across the state. A trailblazer in programming serving Spanish-speaking new immigrants, Julissa has more than two decades of nonprofit experience and innovative insight. Her background includes over 19 years of success in leading and managing evidence-based prevention programs serving new immigrants. She immigrated to the United States nearly 21 years ago from the state of Michoacán in central Mexico, so she understands the health needs of Colorado Latinos and the importance of reaching out to them.
She has defied the expectations of a woman from Mexico, becoming one of the few immigrants in Colorado to be recognized for her significant contributions to the Latino community in an exceptional way. The ramifications of the marginalization and the discrimination that she has faced has only increased her desire to empowering new immigrants through a "family” and community perspective. She creates and produces everything related to the radio show. Julissa is also known not only for her Spanish Voice Over skills, but also for her English‐to-Spanish translation and proofreading services, creative copywriting and audio imaging productions. She is considered one of the unsung heroes, “hidden figures” who has endured with superlative strength, beauty and love. She is a shining example of the potential of new immigrants. Here accomplishments are a strong legacy as she has shaped history and transformed thousands of lives.
Her high degree of motivation and dedication to the Latino community has been recognized by the Latino community. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the following:
· 2017 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Best Practices Award National Diabetes Prevention Program
· 2016 Wells Fargo’s People Who Make a Difference Award
· 2015 Colorado Nonprofit Association’s William Funk Award for Building Stronger Communities
· 2014 Latinas First Foundation Unsung Heroine Award
· 2012 Kathy Hill-Young Community Spirit Award
· 2012 Denver Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award
· 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award
Julissa believes that leadership in the Latino community is critical to creating change in Denver. It provides people with experiences that lead to dramatic individual transformation in terms of new skills, more fully-explored personal values, and a sense of personal power. Through the Latino Initiatives (formerly called Por Tu Familia) program at the American Diabetes Association (ADA), she has been able to build a sense of community in underserved communities across the State of Colorado, constructing civil society in a region of the country undergoing dramatic change, and it has also allowed her to build relationships with groups across the barriers of race, class, sexuality, and gender.
Sarah Harper-Johnston is our club's Global Grant Scholar this year. She arrived in Dublin about two weeks ago, spent some time in mandatory quarantine, and has commenced her studies at Trinity College.
Here's a portion of an e-mail I received from her today.
Classes started this week and it's been very busy and exciting. This is definitely my area of interest and it feels good to be in the right program. Covid cases are rising in Dublin so things are back on a somewhat lockdown for a few weeks but thankfully my classes are still in person.
I have a rotary meeting this weekend for all the global grant scholars in the UK and Ireland so that should be interesting, I'll let you know how that goes. Ten years ago this month I applied to be a RYE student. I'm just so thankful for Rotary.
Happy fall!
Sarah
The gathering of Global Grant Scholars and Peace Fellows in the UK and Ireland is quite an event put on by Rotarians in that area every Fall. It should be a great experience for Sarah.

As you're doing your shopping online, did you know that you can support our Rotary Club with every Amazon purchase? Here’s how:
Go to smile.amazon.com (not amazon.com). Amazon Smile is the same company, same account, same password, but the Amazon Smile program gives one half of one percent of every purchase to charity. No, it’s not a lot, but it’s also not nuthin’ (to be exact: about $150 for the Club so far). So again, go to smile.amazon.com
Sign into your Amazon account as you normally would
On the very top left of the page, next to the AmazonSmile logo, are three horizontal bars. Click there for the drop-down menu.
Scroll ALL the way down to “Your AmazonSmile”; it should be the last option right before “Sign Out”; Click on “Your AmazonSmile”
On the right side of the page, click on the “change charity” box under Your current charity (Note: If you are currently supporting another charity, that’s awesome! These instructions are for those who are not doing so. Also, if you have not previously selected a charity, your default option will be St. Judge Children’s Research Hospital.)
Type in Community Service Fund of the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs; click Select
That’s it. You’re all set. Just remember to go to Smile.Amazon.com when you shop from now on.
