Hello Colorado Springs Rotarians,

We celebrated the 100th anniversary of our club just recently and we're now entering a year with another 100th anniversary coming up -- the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation to be celebrated throughout the year and, in particular, at next June's Rotary International Convention in Atlanta. During its first hundred years, the Rotary Foundation has collected and disbursed millions of dollars in support of the eradication of polio ("We're almost there"), Ambassadorial and Global Grant Scholarships, plus funding for global and local project ideas that come right from clubs like ours. Let's take a look at what's coming up at our club meetings in July.

At our first club meeting on the 8th, you'll have an opportunity to hear about our club's support for youth from Carol Bach (Director, Youth Services) and the 2016 Rotarian of the Year Judy Casey (Youth Exchange Officer)-- Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE), plus the scholarships we fund for local D11 students. Two of the RYLA students our club supported last month will be here to share with you their experiences in Glenwood Springs.

July 15th will feature a program by our very own Jean Feist (Club Secretary for the coming year). You'll hear about the potential for a club initiated Global Grant project for clean water in Nicaragua. Also on the 15th, you'll get an opportunity to meet Annie Nikolaus, our club's youth exchange student who is leaving for a year in Germany next month.

On July 22nd, we welcome Kevin Brousard, a blind athlete who will share his story on becoming a Para-Olympian in the sport of Judo.

Our last meeting of the month will feature our new district governor, Teresa Anson, along with an opportunity to meet Jourdan McGinn, the 2016-2017 Global Grant Scholar, sponsored by our club. Jourdan has earned a $30,000 Global Grant Scholarship funded by the Rotary Foundation and our district for a year of study at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine -- her Rotary area of focus is Maternal and Child Health.

Throughout the month, please take the opportunity to share the word about Flight, our club's major fundraiser for the year. The gala auction will take place this year on October 1st at the Garden of the Gods Club. The new butterflies are on display around town and the raffle tickets will be available shortly for you to sell to support our effort.

As your incoming president, I look forward to a year of opportunity for all of our members to actively participate in our club's and Rotary International's projects in whatever manner you're able. Rotary gives us all an opportunity to serve humanity not only here in Colorado Springs, but around the world.

Flaunting Our Butterflies

We’d like to think the highlight of the Pikes Peak Art and Music Festival held over Fourth of July weekend was the display of five of our beautiful new metal butterflies. At the hospitality center tents at America the Beautiful Park, club members helped kids to make their own decorated butterflies from colorful cupcake liners and other fun craft materials. Thanks to Jason and Paul Aguilar, Anya Kasischke, Matt King, and Andrea Trout for escorting the butterflies, which will be auctioned off October 1 at Garden of the Gods Club after being displayed locally. Thanks also to volunteers George Ehnert, Katherine George, Dave and Edie Finkleman, Jane Hammoud, Ashley Lawrence, and Dennis Shoemaker, who were also on hand to talk up our biggest fundraiser and answer questions about the butterflies.

July Board Meeting

Our club's July Board of Directors meeting will be held Thursday, July 21st. Board meetings are held in the Executive Board room of the Antlers Hotel. It is located directly behind the registration desk. Board meetings begin promptly at 7:30am and are concluded at 9:00am. They are a great way to make-up a meeting and fulfill requirements for white badges. Please let Claudine know if you plan on attending.
