Happy New Year District 5470 Rotarians! I hope your holidays were a wonderful opportunity to relax, refresh and reconnect with family and friends.

SECOND HALF OF THE ROTARY YEAR GOALS

Let’s enter the 2nd half of the Rotary year energized and engaged in the goals set by our individual Rotary clubs. For added inspiration, I’ve included a New Year Rotary Resolutions list written by the ROTARY CLUB OF ROATAN. This comprehensive list can be a blueprint for club and district leaders to help all Rotarians live up to our Rotary ideals and become more engaged in their club.

My official club visits are completed, and now my focus will be to:
    • touch base with each club president to see how we can help each club meet and exceed this year’s goals.
    • look for additional service opportunities and new projects, locally and worldwide, during the remainder of this Rotary year.

DG 5470 Club Visits Nearly Completed

December has arrived, and as we near the halfway point of this Rotary year, I want to thank the clubs I have visited for your warm hospitality and kind attention to my sharing of Rotary’s priorities.

Our clubs vary in size, membership, culture, and projects, but two characteristics remain constant: a genuine friendship and a passion for service. It has been a true joy for Lana I to meet so many great people in Rotary. As of this message I’ve visited all but 3 clubs of the 58 in our District. Thanks again for all you do for your communities, and for the world through Polio Plus and The Rotary Foundation.

    Rotary projects around the globe

    January 2023

    By Brad Webber

    United States

Worldwide, only 17 percent of electronic waste and less than 5 percent of devices containing lithium ion batteries are recycled, even though their chemical elements offer a “cycle of nearly infinite recyclability,” according to Redwood Materials. Since early 2022, more than a dozen Rotary clubs across the United States have collaborated with the Nevada-based battery recycler to host collection drives, yielding tens of thousands of pounds of cell phones, laptops, power drills, electric toothbrushes, and more. “This is a turnkey project,” says Clari Nolet of the Rotary Club of Los Altos, California, a board member of the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group. “You clean out your junk drawer, address U.S. supply chain security and environmental issues, and assist in the adoption of electric cars.”

    2022-2023 RI President Jennifer Jones

First woman takes office as president of Rotary International

EVANSTON, Ill. (June 29, 2022) – Jennifer Jones, member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, will be the first woman to take office as Rotary International President in the service organization’s 117-year existence on 1 July 2022.

During her one-year term, Jones will focus on building new relationships and establishing collaborations with organizations that share Rotary’s commitment to driving impact through humanitarian service and to developing leaders around the globe. She has also made Rotary’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion a key part of her presidential platform.

“Diversity has long been one of our core values and continues to serve as a foundation for how we interact with each other and our communities,” said Jones. “I know that my experiences and perspective as a woman mean that I bring a different lens to how I see and approach opportunities and challenges for our organization. I hope to be a catalyst for similar opportunities for leaders from all backgrounds that comprise the global mosaic of our organization. We are stronger, more creative, and more effective when we ask for and leverage those diverse perspectives to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.”
