There seems to be good progress on our Flight Lite event with a number of Rotarians volunteering to help. We could still use a few more of you to help with many aspects of the fundraiser, to be held September 7. Please see Annie, Vance, or Cass to tell them what you can do to help make it successful.
There were a number of us at the memorial service for James Way, who passed away recently. I will ask for a moment of silence on Friday in his memory.
Come to our next social - Rotary on the Rocks - at Smiling Toad Brewery, Rotarian Biff Morehead's down-home brewery off of 8th Street, on May 3rd from 4:30 to 6:30.
Who are the wealthiest ten individuals of all time (including bringing their wealth into today's dollars)? You might be surprised when I tell you on Friday during my announcements. Hint: many are not alive today. This was compiled by the magazine Money.com.
Those of us who are thinking of going to Italy in November had a dinner on Tuesday at Luigi's to start thinking about dates, airfare, touring around, staying in Rome for a couple of days, and other exciting prospects for the trip. We'll have a good number of Rotarians going and enjoying the olive oil area of Italy.
Nice to see Lynn Boutte back at our club last Friday. We hope he'll rejoin the club!
Thanks to Bill Casey who showed me the Gazette article I read at last week's meeting from 1918 about our club being among the first to voluntarily ration their intake of wheat and wheat products. It was noteworthy and helped in the war effort.
We have identified the projects our club would like to see District 11 fund with the money from the Flight Gala last year. They are very exciting and there are seven of them - six from grade schools and one middle school. We will highlight them sometime in the next few months and invite some of the administrators and teachers to come to the club to tell us about the great things they are doing with the money that they would otherwise not be able to do due to lack of funds for these projects.
Please complete the Rotary Speaker Program Survey that Vance handed out to the club regarding programs you would like (and not enjoy, as well) for the upcoming year when he is Program Director. I know: you can please some of the people some of the time..."
Our Club has decided to establish an ongoing program for sharing Foundation Recognition Points (FRPs) to encourage contributions to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and to help members become Paul Harris Fellows or to obtain multiple Paul Harris levels. See attached documents.
This is the way the program will work:
Members who have FRPs will be asked to donate all or a specified part of their points.
The donated points will establish a pool available for transfer to other members who are contributing to TRF
Members contributing to TRF may choose to use points to help them become a PHF or advance to the next PHF level
The approach essentially functions as a clearinghouse to connect members with points to members who wish to use points in connection with contributions.
To donate or to request points, simply contact Foundation Chair Tom Nelson by phone (719-440-6611) or by email (tcnelson21@gmail.com).”
What does Rotary do? Where do we do it? and How do we do it? In 8 short words, Joseph Kovarik suggests the following: " What do we do? Improve people's lives, where do we do it Locally and globally, How do we do it? Through service."
Short and sweet, this was in the Rotarian Nov 2018.
