December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month
This is a perfect time to highlight The Rotary Foundation’s work in this area. Of special note is
the recent work the RI Foundation has done to drastically reduce mortality from malaria.
This tropical mosquito-borne disease:
● has killed 627,000 people, 80% of whom were children under 5 years old.
● was the leading cause of childhood deaths around the world as of 2020.
Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia, is the first recipient of Rotary’s Programs of Scale award.
It’s funded by:
● $2 million from The Rotary Foundation, and
● $2 million each from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and World Vision U.S.
This program will train and equip 2,500 community health workers to educate the population
and diagnose and treat early cases of malaria in 10 districts in Zambia’s Central and Muchinga
provinces. The goal is to reduce severe and potentially fatal cases by 90%. To learn more, go to
