David London and Neal Paul
The History of Jews in Southeastern Colorado, from 1883 until now at Temple Aaron in Trinidad

Join David London and Neal Paul for a compelling look at the rich and often overlooked history of Jewish life in southeastern Colorado, centered on historic Temple Aaron in Trinidad. Founded in 1883 and built in 1889, Temple Aaron is the oldest continually operating synagogue on its original site in Colorado and the Mountain West.

The program explores Jewish migration along the Santa Fe Trail, highlighting pioneering families in Trinidad and nearby towns such as Raton, New Mexico, and the vital roles Jewish residents played in shaping local government, culture, and education—including early support for higher education through Trinidad State College.

David London, a former Temple Aaron board member, and Neal Paul will also share the modern story of how community members and supporters rallied to preserve the synagogue after 2016, ensuring it remains a living center for education, worship, and cultural celebration today. Attendees will gain historical insight—and perhaps inspiration to visit Trinidad to experience the synagogue’s remarkable Moorish architecture and stunning stained-glass windows firsthand.
