Community Service Planning Meeting

NOTE THE DATE CHANGE. Join us at the community service planning meeting to discuss upcoming projects and share new ideas for the future. If you have guests who  are interested in getting involved with Rotary they are welcome to join us to learn more about the great things Rotary is doing in the community. 

Here is an overview of what was discussed at the previous meeting on August 16th: 

Projects discussed: Theme for next year is Rotary Connects the World there are monthly themes we will try to connect with as well.

• August:
  • Support North Club with Tap N’Golf Fundraiser – Details have been shared in the weekly bulletin and on Facebook and is taking place TONIGHT!  
  • Late August: Provide Solar System lesson to local elementary school to support planet walk  - Needs Curriculum created first, will be postponed at moment.
• September:
  • Support Planet Walk Sept 7^th  - Details are in the weekly bulletin and on Facebook. There has also been a volunteer sign-up circulating.
  • Flight Sept 14^th – Volunteer sign-up will be sent out soon. We will be looking for Check-out helpers and raffle ticket sellers. Hoping to have interact students to be runners bringing out butterflies for pick up.
• Oct:
  • State/District Convention at Mt. Princeton in Oct 11 – 13th, encourage attendance – registration details are shared in weekly bulletin. The club that sends the most members will receive $500 to their service fund
  • Oct 24^th is World Polio Day – discussed teaming up with local donut shops to create fundraiser/awareness. Rotarians can pre-order donuts to take to work and donuts can be sold throughout the day. Optional shops to reach out to: Hurts, Amy’s, Horseshoe, Donut Mill. Can be joint effort with other rotary clubs. Will discuss with Mallie on best way to proceed with plans.
• Nov:
  • Last week of Oct Nov 4^th – 10^th is World Interact Week – Carol will work with Interact club to come up with possible project
  • VFW Poppy Drive Weekend of Nov 9^th
  • Cougars Care Thanksgiving Event- 2 days to volunteer (Date TBD) Day 1 Sort and Pack/Day 2 Assist Families with Pick-up
    • Discussed having a social encouraging rotary members & community to attend as well requesting non-perishable or monetary donations for fresh food. Red Leg Brewing is near Coronado and they have an upstairs room that would work great.
    • Would like to do socials supporting a project/cause once a quarter.
  • Supporting One Nation Walking Together – Cass emailed stats provided by  Kathy from One Nation about the Lakota Reservation which were shared with those present. Cass will organize a donation drive with Emerald who is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award and they can also present to other local rotary clubs and see if they would like to participate in the donation drive. Cass – is this something we can plan for January timeframe when there are not as many holiday events occurring? Just a thought/suggestion.
• Dec:
  • Santa Day @ Queen Palmer
  • Columbia Christmas Project – Christmas Gift shopping for families at Columbia Elementary (Shopping may occur before black Friday, present wrapping 1^st or 2^nd week of December)
  • Bell Ringing for Salvation Army throughout month – Caryn will follow up for new contact for dates, anticipate large number who want to volunteer to honor Craig Whitney
• Feb: Mock Trial
• April is Maternal & Child Health Month -the club recently received a request to create Jared’s Boxes for Saint Frances Medical Center on E Woodmen.
  • A Jared Box is a shoebox size plastic storage box filled with small gifts, toys, cards, and games. The boxes provide a fun, special diversion for young patients in the hospital.
  • Would be a great social for April to encourage donations of the boxes and items to fill the boxes at the beginning of the month and then have a packing party or encourage members to create boxes on their own to be donated.
  • Sam will reach out to contact Jason Browne about need of Saint Francis and if April is okay or needs to be sooner.               
• April is also Earth Month – Kay mentioned looking into Rainbow Falls for a clean up event.

Other topics discussed:

Future project ideas for Karen Kantor & Partners in Housing or Gloria Brooks & Pikes Peak Hospice.

We also discussed possible dates for Habitat for Humanity – we were not able to utilize any of the dates in August, but will follow up on other possible dates in future months.
