THE NORTHERN COG JULY 2000 Volume 47, Issue 1
A "New" Rotary
A new Rotary year has begun. New administrations are in place at every level from club through district and Rotary International itself. Part of the greatness of Rotary is the continuity that exists even though we change leaders every year. That continuity exists because Rotary has developed one of the best selection and training processes in the volunteer world. Right now, we know who the presidents and district governors are going to be through the year 2002-2003.
I come into office as an exception to that rule, having become President-elect in mid-year. As a relatively new member of the club, I don't have all the information that I really need. I discovered this past year that much of the institutional knowledge of what we do is in the heads of past presidents, committee and project chairs who have been responsible for various activities. Not knowing what questions to ask or whom to ask them of, some things risk falling through the cracks.
The North Colorado Springs Rotary Club has been one of the top clubs in the district for years, and there should be no drastic changes this year. But I would like to change the way we communicate and record what we do. Because of my experience this past year, I am going to try to get more of the information documented in one place. It doesn't have to be fancy or complicated, just some notes about projects and activities gathered together for all to see. Everyone will have the club manual to check for information on what we do and how we do it.
I also have asked Max to restructure the budget. Because he is changing computers, this will not be quite as disruptive as it could be. The essential goal of the change will be to let us know how we are spending our "good works" money and how much we have to take on new projects. We will then know whether we need to raise more money to do everything we want to do or spend more money to use all our available funds.
We will take advantage of technology to communicate. As one who initially resisted the Internet and e-mail (I'm sure some people decried the telephone as a new-fangled device a century ago.), I have come around 180 degrees. E-mail, properly used, can be an excellent communication tool. I use it now to send information to Board members and to club members. Without e-mail, the Russian project would have been much more difficult. If you have e-mail make sure we have your current address. We will not give out those addresses to outside users.
The Rotary world is using the Internet more than ever. President Frank Devlyn has his own site www.frankdevlyn.org, which is linked to
www.rotary.org
. District 5470 also has a site, www.rotary5470.org, which is maintained. Our own site needs some work. With everything done electronically, it's relatively easy to move current information into a web page. The main trick is finding someone to do it. Volunteers? I just received an e-mail about a training session which Rotary will be conducting on Saturday, October 28 in
Things are going to happen faster this year than before. The District Governor will visit on August 2. He would like to have a new member inducted that day. We have several approved applications, but there is still time for more. He would also like to present a new Paul Harris. Want Eddie to present your Paul Harris? See
District Conference will be October 12 through 15 in Vail. The business meeting will be Friday through Sunday with the hope that more people will be able to attend. District Conference is for everyone, not just officers and directors. It really does help to learn more about the big picture in the world of Rotary.
Ultimately our success this year will again depend on our carrying through with the service projects we have identified as important. Having prior experience as club president, I now realize that the board is not the source for good project ideas. It is the members. The board merely sets in place the resources to carry out the projects. If you see something that needs to be done in our community, step forward with that idea and be prepared to chair the project. Ideas abound. Ideas which merit a commitment of our resources, whether financial or hands-on service, are those which someone feels strongly enough about to lead and carry out.
I have every reason to think this is going to be another great Rotary year for the North club. It will be great because you, the members will Create Awareness and Take Action.

"Our club has been undertaking various service projects for the past 55 years in all of Rotary's avenues of service. Now we are going to establish a reference library for the youth in our town.
"The emphasis will be, specially, on geography and travel and we are looking for new & used books of all kinds. Travel guides, issues of National Geographic, Maps & Atlases of various countries, road maps, travel books... anything that covers geography and travel. The Library will be housed at the local unit of our "Youth Hostel" and will be open to all free of cost."
"We believe that the first step toward world understanding and peace is knowledge of the land and people of other countries. Unfortunately, the subject of geography does not get enough emphasis in our educational curriculum."
"We would be very happy and thankful for any and all materials you can ship to us.
