Plant for the Future in our National Park

Former RI President Ian S. Riseley challenged Rotary clubs across the globe to plant a tree for every member of their club in our local communities. Minneaplis Club #9 and Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary are joining forces to support the efforts of non-profit Mississippi Park Connection and the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, the National Park in the heart of the Twin Cities.

Please join us on May 4 as we help set up a tree nursery located in Coldwater Spring. The nursery (also known as a gravel bed) will house 250 bare root trees for the entire summer to receive the critical care needed to ensure their success once transfered to the ground in the park (to be completed in September). We need up to 14 people to help place the gravel, make way for the trees and plant the trees in the tree nursery.

8:30-9:00 a.m.: Coffee, light breakfast and meet and greet
9:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Planting event

Major changes to the Mississippi River's landscape are on the horizon. The 72-mile Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, the national park in the heart of the Twin Cities, will lose more than 20% of its canopy within the next ten years, forever changing the landscape, river quality, natural areas and wildlife we love. Plant for the Future, a program of Mississippi Park Connection, is a proactive plan to improve this outlook through a $1M campaign including educational programming, plantings, special events, volunteer and fundraising opportunities, and more.
