How We Help Our Local Community
HOW WE HELP (Below is a cumulative list of past and present activities and charities we have been involved with since our club was chartered in 2003.) Local Community Children’s Homes We have taken children to entertainment and educational activities and support them at Christmastime such as the Children’s Shelter, ARC, Presbyterian Childrens’ Home, St. Peter & St. Joseph Childrens’ Home, BoysVille. Safety Whys Baby Sitter Training Classes We offered a day-long class teaching teens proper baby sitting techniques that includes nutrition, psychology, exercise, play, and emergency procedures. Northside ISD Annual Grant We helped modify school playgrounds so handicapped children can play together with their classmates. Leon Springs & Aue Elementary Schools (Early Act Clubs) Children learn community service and leadership skills. TMI–The Episcopal School of Texas – (INTERACT Clubs) Community service activities, communication and leadership skills, scholarships. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Activities) We fund and volunteer at leadership seminars for teens. San Antonio & Hill Country Daily Bread Food Banks We supported these groups with volunteer service and donations. CAM (Christian Assistance Ministries) We supported this organization with volunteers, food, clothing, and donations because they provide many things to people in need. Cactus Pear Music Festival We provided youth scholarships and staffing at free community concerts and at free children’s concerts. Battered Women’s and Children’s Shelter We have supported this organization with volunteers, food, clothing, and other donations throughout the year. Early Act/First Knights Provided character education for school children. UTSA Scholarship Established to honor past club presidents. Literacy Projects Provided English and Spanish dictionaries to schools and sponsored. San Antonio Youth Literacy. Provided readers and funds for supporting second grade students to increase their reading levels more than one grade level in a school year. Wounded Warriors Dinners We have treated our wounded service members and their families to several Thank You dinners during the year Habit for Humanity Volunteered at construction sites to construct three homes Elf Louise Volunteered at providing Christmas gifts for children, both wrapping and delivering Communities in Schools Provided back packs with school supplies Haven for Hope: Volunteered and scholarship for vocational training Alamo Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Inc. Annual sponsorship. Cancer Society: Sponsored Ronald McDonald House: Volunteered to provide meals to residents. Leon Springs Volunteer Fire Dept Sponsored and helped fund fire equipment Morgan's Wonderland Sponsored and volunteered Saddle Light Center Sponsored --------------------------------------------- International Involvement: Polio Plus We are proud to participate in this world-wide program to eradicate the polio virus all over the world. Rotaplast We provided donations, volunteers, and professional staff for medical missions in 3rd world countries. Rotary Group Study Exchange We sponsored groups of young people for an extended period of time from different countries to come and learn about the US. Piedras Negras Country School Our club helped build their first toilets. We also provided much needed supplies to the teachers and children. Rotary International Youth Exchange Program We have sent students from the local area abroad and sponsor students from abroad for the summer or a complete school year. Orfanateria de Paulino (Piedras Negras Orphanage) This is the only orphanage along the border which accepts children with disabilities. Wheelchair Foundation Provided wheel chairs for handicapped people in need. Participated in two grants including a matching grant through the Rotary International Foundation to provide 22 containers with 250 wheel chairs per container in Mexico and Africa. |
