Troop 407 - Camp Constantin Summer Camp

Rotary Scouting America Troop 407
 
The Rotary Club of San Antonio at The Dominion sponsors several local Scouting units.  One of them is Troop 407.  Troop 407 has 16 members that range in ages from 10 to 17.  The troop meets year-round in Fair Oaks Ranch.  During June, 13 of the troop's members and 4 adult leaders spent a week at Camp Constantin on scenic Possum Kingdom Lake.  The campers stayed in canvas A-frame tents pitched on top of on wood platforms and ate meals in an air conditioned dining hall.  During the day, the Scouts attended hands-on classes they selected from a variety of subjects.  Classes our Scouts took included sailing, canoeing, lifesaving, archery, rifle shooting, auto maintenance, basketry, and welding.  One Scout spent most of the week on a canoe trip that had him camping in different locations along the lake, snorkeling, and fishing.  Each of the Scouts had a good time and earned several activity badges (called merit badges).  Two of our scouts give a glimpse of what summer camp was like for some of the Scouts the Rotary Club supports.  Thank you for supporting us.  John McCune, Scoutmaster, Scouts BSA Troop 407

My experiences at scout camp
 

My experience I would like to share is when I took the lifesaving merit badge.  One day, my merit badge counselors took me and my small class tubing because we were done with all our requirements. I rode in the motorboat out into the lake, and I climbed out onto the little floating tube and hung onto the handles. The driver started going fast and I started flying into the air and slamming against the water. Eventually, I was holding on by my fingertips and the rest of my body was sideways. I flew off and hit the water headfirst a couple times. When I floated up, they came and picked me up.  It was a fun experience from scout camp I’ll never forget.

My experience with summer camp that I remember is mostly the stuff outside of the merit badges like the dining hall or when I had finished my classes for the day. Meeting Hudson who was our guide and the person we'd go to for questions for the week was awesome because of his chill and mellow personality but still caring for us as individuals. Another great and somewhat funny part of summer camp I remember is a game one of the scouts invented called Doorknob and we ended up making a short chant for dinner once.  Summer camp per usual is a great and overall exciting experience because of the opportunities you can get while you're there, whether it be meeting new people or having fun and making new memories.
