What a fascinating story we heard from Erik Saltvold – "Erik the Bike Man” In 1977, Erik started his bike shop at the age of 13. Using money from his job as a paperboy, Erik bought 50 used bikes to repair and sell. He ran his business out of a barn in his parents' backyard. 45 years later, ERIK'S is the largest independent bike dealer in the USA with 33 shops throughout the Midwest and online. The following are summaries of the announcements presented at the May 11 meeting.
Tree Planting (Tim Erhart / Todd Gerhardt) – 8:30 -12:30 pm Saturday May 14. On HWY 101. Please come out to help with the Tree Planting, this Saturday morning, While a signup sheet was passed around at the meeting, according to Tim, we are really short of volunteers who can actually plant. Bring friends and HS and college kids - as well as shovels, rakes, and your muscles. Meeting at 8 am on HWY 101 across the street from Riley Crossing. Scholarship breakfast Wednesday May 18, Arrive by 6:30 – 6:45 am
(Ruth Lunde) lundeworld@yahoo.com Next week's Rotary meeting will be our Scholarship Presentation Breakfast at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres on Wednesday May 18. There will be no meeting next week at the Legion.
Our Scholarship breakfast will be in-person only, we will not have a zoom option.
If you have not already RSVP’d, please reply to the Evite invitation emailed on May 6th or you can call or text Ruth Lunde. We are hoping for a fairly accurate headcount, so your response is appreciated.
With thanks to our Rotary Foundation and how so many of you helped raise funds at the 4th of July and other events, a total of $25,000 will be awarded to these high school seniors who have done amazing volunteering in our community and beyond. Come for this special Scholarship breakfast to honor these high school seniors who demonstrate “service above self”' and enjoy our special speaker and former Rotary member, Pastor Joel Johnson.
Our guests next week will be the 23 scholarship recipients and their parents or guests.
Rotary members should not bring guests to the meeting next week. If you are working with a potential member from the open house, you might want to let them know that they can join us again on May 25 to hear Dr. Jambor Igor Roland of the Rotary Club of Miskolc, Hungary. He will update us on their Rotary Club’s Humanitarian efforts that we helped fund, to aid Ukrainian refugees.
Youth Exchange – (Carrie Neubauer/ Bill Schubert): Are you curious about what's involved with hosting an exchange student? Consider the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.
The Chanhassen Rotary is seeking three welcoming host families for a male exchange student from Chile, who will be attending Chanhassen High School as a junior. This exceptional incoming student is excited to study in America and loves the idea about learning more about Minnesota. He is also an avid soccer player and ready to find ways to play during his visit. He will arrive the last week of August and stay through the school year. Each host would have the student for a 3-month rotation.

Distinguished Service Award Nominations! (Ladd Conrad / Mike Howe) To recognize the impact volunteers have on our community, Chanhassen Rotary needs your help. We annually award a Distinguished Service Award to one Chanhassen resident who exemplifies the Rotary’s goal of Service Above Self.
Think about those individual in your business, organization, neighborhood, or club that you feel are deserving of this honor. The person must be a resident of Chanhassen and only non-paid volunteer activities will be considered.
The Rotary Club Award Committee will select finalists from the nominations received. The recipient will be saluted at a Chanhassen City Council meeting and will also be the grand marshal of the 4th of July Parade Rotary Parade.

Volunteer for PROP! Call to action! Anne Voas voas.anne@gmail.com
PROP (People Reaching Out to People) is once again hosting their Summer Food for Kids program and needs a willing local leader to help with a one-time project. The objective is to collect sold cans of chicken from customers at Lakewinds Coop. The store manager is ready to go and recommends a Friday or Saturday. PROP is on a schedule of collection in May in order to feed kids starting in June.
Our past experience says it takes 2 people to be on-site and enthusiastic for about 4 hours. Add on efforts might be 1) to solicit funds from people to beef up the net effort 2) incorporate a message of “chicken challenge” if you want to be connected to two other clubs who may collect- a game of “who collects the most”.
Early advertisement of this effort has not attracted a leader. Is this a good fit for you?? For you to help a kid get a couple volunteer hours? Please reach out to Anne ASAP if you can be the one.
