2014 May 15 Meeting - Randy Tooker re Boys and Girls Club + District Awards

Randy Tooker - Placer Boys and Girls Club

Our featured speaker was Randy Tooker of the Boys and Girls Club of Placer County (www.bgcplacercounty.org).  The current club is in Auburn but the Imageoverall mission is to work with other locations in Placer County to start clubs. The Boys and Girls Clubs are open every day after school with extended hours for minimum day, school breaks and during the summer. The goal of the club is to allow for participation in activities during out-of- school time, including the summer, enabling young people to do well in school, serve their community and to take responsibility for their own well being. They are interested in creating a club in Lincoln and are looking for interested people to work on an advisory/planning board. 

We were pleased to have Alex Daniels and Alex Robles Diaz of LHS as our students of the month. They were on "dismissed" early as it is exam time and the school Awards Ceremony is tonight, where Rotary will present 6 $1000 scholarships to outstanding students.

That lucky long-time Rotarian Ed Page won the drawing again but no Ace of Spades. We are up to about $250 for the next drawing. Happy birthday to Pete Walker who was 83. 

Mary Ann reported on her trip to the Outer Banks where she brought back a club banner from the Rotary Club of Wilmington (NC). 

Rose Ruiz told her interesting story.  Rose came to the US when she was about 3 years old, and attended school without understanding any English (except blah blah blah)!  We are so proud to have Rose as a member of our club.

Karen went through the awards that our club was given for the 2013-14 year. Pictures of the awards are in the meeting slides. These rewards included:

  • One of 4 clubs in district receiving award for "Effective Use of Social Media."
  • Zone 25 award for Literacy and Best Four Avenues of Service
  • District Double for Membership Ignite Program
  • Highest Literacy Award
  • Large Club Blood Drive Award
