Frank Romano, our Past District Governor, was in Doylestown on March 2, 2015 to discuss Rotary's new global grant structure and an international project to build an Education Community Center in Nigeria that is in development by the Rotary Club of Harleysville.

Frank explained that the two main grants are Global Grants administered by Rotary International which have a minimum funding level of $30,000 and District grants which cover local community projects for smaller sums. District grants are funded by the money that all Rotarians give to the Rotary Foundation’s annual fund. The donations go to The Rotary Foundation and after 3 years, 50% returns to the district for District Grants.

Frank told us about his home clubs project to build an Education Community Center in Nigeria. They are partnering with the Rotary Club of Umuahia Central in southern Nigeria, to establish an Inter-Continental Education Community Center. The project will bring literacy to a community of 23,000 people along with practical skills training for adults and children in the community. It will ultimately serve as a model for other African communities to develop a local educational and economic environment. The goal is to change the culture in the region from a third world of poverty and dependence into a society of learning, advancement and independence. The people will be transformed from individuals without an understanding of how to control their own destiny into a healthy vibrant community of skilled workers and businesses. He asked us to direct friends and relatives to the Harleysville web site www.harleysvillerotary.org to learn about the project and perhaps contribute.
