Norris introduced Ralph Mellanby, Guest Speaker; Henry Becker from the Downtown Club; Arie Vrugteveen, prospective member; and Christopher Michael, prospective member.
 
Sergeant-at-Arms
 
Norris, serving as Sergeant-at-Arms, began by thanking Roseanne, Cathy, Sheree, and Kris for a lovely Christmas event. Other happy dollars accepted from:
 
Bob McKay - he along with Ron Kozub celebrate their 29th year in Rotary. Also, his family came to visit at Christmas and they had a wonderful time;
Rob Welch - so happy to see Brian Radford;
Cathy Henry - watched the Rose Bowl parade and was pleased to see the winner was Rotary International;
Sheree Taillon
- she now knows the gender of her grandchild (a girl) and her name (Emma);
Matt Taylor - happy that he and Ed Telenko have been in the club for over 40 years;
John Teibert - his nephew was voted Canadian Soccer Player for the Year;
Paul Massuet - happy for everyone here;
Jim Howes - enjoyed Christmas at his son's place in Toronto;
Dan Toppari - happy that his cousin with the one year old twins is expecting again.

Who's Who. Rob Kozub 
 
Long-standing club member, Ron Kozub, is this week's Who's Who.
 
Born and raised:  St. Catharines
Educated:  Ryerson in Toronto (Industrial Engineering) and York University (B.A.)
Significant Other:  Donna Kozub
Family: Kelly, Kim, and Scott Kozub.
Work History: Rich and varied. Managerial. Now owns and operates, The Wine Garden of Pelham. 
History in Rotary: Invited by join by Brian Radford in 1985. Became President in 1992. Served several sessions on the board. Many memorable experiences. 
What Rotary Means: Lifelong friendships developed. Ron shared his "moving" story. 
Passions:  Family, Business, and Rotary, the latter helping Ron to give back to his community.
 
President's Comments
 
Email Protocol: When communicating with Rotary Club members, keep it to Rotary business.
Rotary Leadership Training: January 9th at Niagara Falls High School in Niagara Falls New York.
 
Announcements
 
Donations Committee (Keith Shaver):

Keith advised that the Donations Committee met in November and reviewed a number of requests. Approval given to the following:
Autism Ontario - $375 toward summary camp/day camp (for the Niagara region)
YMCA - $500 toward summer camp
Thesaurus for Schools - $500 (Four Rotary Clubs participating)
 
Two other requests are being presented to the club for approval:
 
Stokes Seeds Community Village - a seniors home, but also a resource centre and apprentice job training.  They are trying to raise $1.6 million dollars. It is proposed that the club commit $9,000 - $3,000 per year over next three years.
 
Bethlehem Place - establishing a Learning Resource Centre for kids.  Looking for $8,000 Would like to give them a $3,000 one-time donation.
 
Moved by Keith Shaver and seconded by Jim Howes:

THAT the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South commit $3,000 per year for three years for the Stokes Seeds Community Village  
AND THAT the club donate $3,000 to the Learning Resource Centre for Bethlehem Place. 
 
All in favour.  Carried.
 
Keith thanked his committee members who include Paul Massuet, June Manning, Norris Brown, Tom Schulz, Jim Howes, and John D'Ambrosio.
 
New Member Announcement (John Teibert):

John proposed two new members  - Arie Vrugteveen and Elisabeth Zimmerman. This is the second publication. If anyone knows any reason why Arie and Elisabeth should not be recommended for membership, please speak with John Teibert.
 
Explore Niagara Car Rally (Cathy Henry):
Cathy announced that there are only 118 days left before our major fundraiser - Explore Niagara Car Rally. Committee members will meet after lunch to discuss. Committee members include Kris Akilie, Sheree Taillon, Bob McKay, Jim Hooper, Arie Vrugteveen, Laetitia de Witt, Paul Massuet, and Roseanne Morissette.

Guest Speaker, Ralph Mellanby

Ralph Mellanby - recognized as the man who made Hockey Night in Canada the Saturday night institution it currently is and author of "Walking with Legends" - spoke to the club about his experiences, his friends for the past 60 years, and shared his new book, entitled "Let the Games Begin."
 
Kris Aklie thanked Ralph for his entertaining stories and presented him with a token of our appreciation.
