Mayor Walter started with an enthusiastic nod to the ‘Standard’ for their headline “We are Rocking!’ He then reviewed highlights from 2016, including:
•World Hockey championship for women U18
•Global Brand IKEA locating in the Fairview Mall
•Becoming a ‘foreign trade zone’ in Niagara
•The GO announcement, which allows budgeting for preparatory infrastructure changes (like bridges)
•Canada 150 and related investments, such as those associated with Rotary Park
•Meridian Centre will become a stand-alone budget item, with Parks and Rec benefitting.
•A student’s residence
•Readying the old Hotel Dieu site for development
•Looking towards productive use of the General Hospital site – announcement anticipated this week
•Port Dalhousie – real progress is underway
And in 2017 –
•Regionalized Transit – a must for our region
•Our 150th anniversary
Walter then answered a couple of questions, and focussed on:
•The gap between Municipal and Regional Government – we have to eventually embrace one level, regional, but it will take some time.
•”Compassionate City” – a concept he is clearly passionate about. He illustrated with a story about a first nations ceremonial burn in Centennial Park – its use as a training example instead of refusing it, and the support of both city and the general public for the ‘fire-keeper’
