During each school semester, Store Manager Sandra Heerema and Lead Volunteer Jerry Gerritsen and their team welcome co-op students of all levels and abilities. In New Again’s commitment to provide a safe and meaningful work experience, tasks are suited to the ability of each individual student. As a result, students gain a strong sense of personal achievement along with a positive picture of the rewards that come from contributing to the success of the entire organization. BDSS is very grateful to New Again as one of its most valued community partners in enabling practical learning to help students find pathways to post-secondary employment, career and education opportunities.
This unique award was initiated in 2006 by the Rotary Club of Lincoln in partnership with Beamsville District Secondary School (BDSS) and Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. Its purpose is to celebrate Town of Lincoln businesses or not-for-profit organizations that demonstrate outstanding support for the BDSS Co-operative Education Program. It is presented annually in conjunction with the Chamber’s Outstanding Business Achievement Awards.
Each semester of each school year, co-operative education work placements are secured for approximately 140 Beamsville high school students in Grades 11 & 12 and specialized school to community program. Students spend between one and four periods of each school day in the workplace. Co-op placements would not be possible without the voluntary participation of some 50 businesses and not-for-profit organizations in Lincoln.
The award evolved from Lincoln Rotary’s commitment to VOCATIONAL SERVICE – to provide the community links necessary for secondary school students to find “Pathways to Opportunity” through meaningful experiences that will help lead them to suitable education and work opportunities upon graduation. The award recipient is selected by BDSS co-op teachers based on criteria specific to co-op education goals.
