On July 13th, Helene Visser and Randell Barclay, addressed the Rotary Club of Nashua regarding the Tygerberg Bronchoscope Project, a global grant also supported by the Rotary Club of Nashua. Randell is our District Governor nominee (2022-2023) and is currently District Treasurer. He undertook this global grant project. Helene is the host partner and project leader for the project.
TB and HIV-related respiratory diseases are the largest killer of children under the age of 18 in South Africa. Helene has been affiliated with Tygerberg Hospital in South Africa for many years. She was aware that they had a 20-year-old pediatric bronchoscope, used at this teaching hospital, that needed to be upgraded. Her Rotary Club adopted Tygerberg Hospital as part of Rotary Club International’s 100-year celebration. They were in need of $220,000 for a pediatric sonar bronchoscope. They do 80 procedures a month, 60 of which are lifesaving. (Many hospitals only do 60 per year!). Med students from all over Africa come to this hospital to learn.
If any Rotarians venture to South Africa, Helene will be happy to tour anyone to show them the hospital.
The Rotary Club or Blouberg presented Rick Manganello and the Rotary Club of Nashua with Awards of Recognition for assistance in preparing the global grant in support of Tygerberg Children’s Hospital in South Africa.
