STEMBuds

On June 5th, Ashok Arun, Deepti Srinivasan, and Anish Mukherjee, sophomores from Nashua High South, addressed the Rotary Club of Nashua regarding their Stembuds.org program. STEMBuds was started by Ashok Arun (freshman at Nashua High School South) in May of 2016. It is a club in which a group of Nashua high/middle school students visit Tier-1 elementary schools in the Nashua School District and spread STEM related topics, in an interesting and fun way. 70% of the students attending Tier-1 schools are on a meal plan. 

 

There are 5 Tier-1 elementary schools in Nashua. The main idea is to use children's natural curiosity and love for games to plant a genuine interest in STEM and empower them to take charge of their own academic future.

 

They spoke about their passion to make math and science engaging and fun for elementary school kids in Nashua. There are 36 volunteers in their program, and they are working with about 115 students district wide.

 

Using fun and energetic teaching methods such as slime, balloon cars, math board games, lava lamps, math kickball, and more, they cover various math and science concepts.

 

Anish, Ashok, and Deepti spoke about the effect and improvement the program has had on grades and test scores, about fundraising goals, and how they plan to continue the program after they graduate and move on.
