On March 3rd, NPD Captain Jennifer Moriarty, addressed the Rotary Club of Nashua regarding, the Nashua Mounted Police Unit. This was an amazing program about community engagement, innovation and local leadership.

Captain Moriarty is a 21-year veteran of the Nashua Police. She had the idea of starting this special mounted division of the police department back in the fall of 2023. She saw it as an opportunity to help build a positive image of our police department, drive recruitment and motivate community outreach.
She got early approval from our Police Chief and went on to get buy-in from her peers and Nashua Police Commissioners. As the program was coming together, it was clear the best way to move it forward was to establish a non-profit to help fund the care and equipment for the horses.

With the help of Wendy Hunt from Nashua’s Chamber of Commerce, George Russell from WSMN and other community leaders, Captain Moriarty was able to build out a non-profit and make her dream a reality.

Since it’s inception, the mounted unit has done community event outreach and has plans to patrol Mine Falls Park, Yudicky Farms and ultimately Main Street this summer. The non-profit is going well and they are raising modest dollars to help build on the two horse team and officers. They have ~$10k in the bank but could use more to help fund it. No Nashua tax dollars are used to fund this program.

No matter where she goes, people have a positive reaction to the horses and Nashua’s Police Department…just as Captain Moriarty envisioned!!
