On May 20th, Mike Shalin and Steve Babnineau, addressed the Rotary club of Nashua regarding, their long and illustrious careers in sports journalism, Mike as a writer and Steve as a photographer. They have collaborated on a new book called “The Home Team” which centers on the Boston athletic scene… I’m told there are several teams of note here in the area? They also shared their personal stories,…
…including Mike covering the 1980 Olympics, especially the “Miracle on Ice” hockey championship in which the puny Americans beat the mighty Russians! They shared also some of their perspectives on steroid use and gambling, some of which has tarnished sports. Steve also talked about the evolution of sports cards and franchise licensing as well as his task of culling down over 350,000 photographs to the book as well as covering the world series games at Fenway.
