On January 25th, Lieutenant Kerry Baxter of the Nashua Police Department, addressed the Rotary Club of Nashua regarding her path to becoming a law enforcement officer, her experience at the Nashua Police Department, and the overall operations of the Nashua Police Department. Kerry has been recognized with many awards for her service.

After high school, Kerry attended Bentley College in the finance department but knew that was not her calling after one year.  Inspired by family friends who were in law enforcement, Kerry transferred to the University of Idaho and completed her degree in criminal justice.  She moved back to Massachusetts and volunteered and then worked in police departments of several Massachusetts towns before being hired the by Nashua Police Department.

Kerry has been with the Nashua Police Department for 17 years.  During that time she has been a patrol officer, a detective, worked in youth services, worked in professional standards, and currently is Division Supervisor for Special Investigations.  One of this Division’s roles is to handle referrals from New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth and Family (DCYF).  One alarming trend Kerry reported on is the increase in the number of DCYF referrals due to the heroin epidemic.  Referrals increased from 10 referrals in Dec 2014 to 44 referrals in Dec 2015.

Kerry highlighted the roles of the various Bureaus that make up the Nashua Police Department including Uniformed Field Operations (Patrol), Detective, Professional Standards, Services, and Legal.

Thanks to Kerry for providing this unique perspective on being a law enforcement officer.
