Maryse introduced Jim McCormick and Larry Hersh from the International Committee. Jim read a quote from Tina Andrade about 3rd world births. Maryse challenged the committee for this year’s work, and the club has partnered with a club in Mexico, working with a clinic treating children with neurological disorders.
Larry spoke and explained that the club has worked with other clubs and supported them, and this year Maryse asked them to actually lead a project. The committee decided it had to be doable and fundable this year, it had to impact families and children, had to be between 50-150K, and had to be in the Western Hemisphere to facilitate travel. The local Rotary Club in Mexico is Corregidora and the funds were targeted for medical equipment for remote clinics, and hydroponic greenhouses for food and funding. This is a link to the video he presented: http://vimeo.com/105076312, enter password 123. The video shows examples of children with botulism and other disorders who go from immobility to walking on their own. 5% of the children outside of Mexico City have neurological disorders that are treatable. The President of the local Rotary club has been a Rotarian for 10 years and was a former Rotary President in France. They are 2.5 hours NW of Mexico city. They are setting up a clinic near the Rotary Club and a hydroponic greenhouse SE of Mexico city, because it had both clean water and electricity. They primarily grow tomatoes, both for the food source and as an income source for the clinic.
FUMENEP is a large medical foundation in Mexico City serving all of Mexico, they set up the organization to target primarily children with neurological disorders. The organization provides Prevention teaching, Treatment of the children and Research to improve treatments. They focus on the lower economic strata of the population.
