On May 23rd, Gabriel Melendez of Guatemala’s Every Mother Counts, addressed the Rotary Club of Nashua regarding Every Mother Counts, a non-profit organization teaching a 3 year midwife program to 15 students in Guatemala.  Due to the Latin America’s high poverty rate, the maternal mortality rate is 140 per 100,000 births.

Since the government health care facilities discriminate against the poor and non-Spanish speaking population, the newly trained midwife will be able to go out into the community and provide much needed medical attention to expectant mothers.
