Destiny Africa

The May 14 program was opened by Tina Landel, the local coordinator for the visiting Kampala Children's Centre Choir.  They group of 30 or so ages 10-18 are on a 16 week tour of the eastern USA.  They are performing frequently throughout the region.   The members are all orphans at the center. Their hope is to become the next generation of leaders, healthcare workers and teachers in Kampala.

In Uganda, the many years of war and conflict have decimated the adult population.  Along with widespread incidence of AIDS, it leaves one person in 13 person  orphaned.  There is no government safety net or social programming to support orphans.  Orphaned children are left to fend for themselves frequently living on streets or becoming indentured household servants.  They must provide for their own schooling as well as sustenance.  The center provides love, a sense of family and education besides shelter.  It is a model orphanage for the entire country of Uganda. 

Those interested in sponsoring a student may contact www.destinyafrica.org.  A student not at the orphanage can be supported for $45 per month.  The need for help and support is great as there are more than 1 million orphans in Uganda.
