On June 16th, Steve Buxton, Chief of Nashua Fire & Rescue (NFR) and a fireman in Nashua since 1992, addressed the Rotary Club of Nashua regarding the NFR Master Plan that calls for a new fire station in the area of Pine Hill Road to better service that corridor and much of Amherst Street.
The NFR Master Plan also calls for major upgrades to all remaining 7 fire stations across the city. The consultants hired by the city, gave our fire infrastructure the grade of a “C”.
2023 came the first line of duty death when Jessica Wyman passed from what was an occupational hazard. Two other members of Nashua Fire currently have cancer as do several department retirees. These afflictions are caused by PFAS (forever chemicals).
Recruitment and retention is priority for Chief Buxton. Wellness, education and career value are a major part of recruitment efforts. NFR is also working on a Fire Exploration CTE program for youth and high school students to help build a pipeline of talent for Nashua’s future.
