Rotary International was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1905 by Paul Harris, a lawyer with a vision to develop professional fellowship among business leaders. Harris’s idea was simple yet profound: professionals from diverse backgrounds could join together in friendship and service, harnessing their collective expertise and goodwill to create positive change. The first Rotary club met in Harris’s office, rotating meetings among members’ workplaces—hence the organization’s name.
Rotary’s guiding principles are rooted in the pursuit of peace, goodwill, and fellowship. The organization’s vision statement is “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” Rotary achieves this vision through its commitment to seven core areas of focus:
Peace building and conflict prevention
Disease prevention and treatment
Water, sanitation, and hygiene
Maternal and child health
Basic education and literacy
Community economic development
Supporting the environment
Today, Rotary International stands as one of the world’s foremost service organizations, woven into the fabric of communities across the globe. Its influence reaches far beyond its familiar emblem, shaping lives and transforming societies through shared ideals and active humanitarian initiatives.
While Rotary International provides the overarching vision and resources, the engine of change is the local Rotary club. These clubs are comprised of professionals, business leaders, and community members dedicated to service above self. Local clubs are the face of Rotary in their towns and cities, connecting global ideals to local realities, actively sponsoring projects tailored to the particular challenges and opportunities of their communities.
Since the founding of the Nashua Rotary Club in 1921, the City of Nashua, the State of New Hampshire, the United States and the World have benefitted from the hard work, dedication and generosity of Nashua Rotarians. We have made a huge difference in the lives of so many less fortunate people, our community organizations, and the international community. We are proud of the sustainable and impactful Community Grants Endowment and the Scholarship Endowment we have established and the many ways in which we support the Nashua community as well as the Rotary International mission. Overall, through volunteer hours, grants exceeding $45,000–$70,000 annually, and strategic partnerships, the Rotary Club of Nashua has transformed community welfare, education, and infrastructure in Greater Nashua and beyond.
Rotary clubs are renowned for their emphasis on fellowship. Weekly meetings, service events, social gatherings, and professional networking foster deep bonds among members and create a sure foundation for business and personal success
Our Club is committed to encouraging the development of leadership skills and ethical standards. The “Four-Way Test”—a code of ethics developed by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor—serves as a guiding principle:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
