Now a little Milford Rotary and Milford Town history……….

When the Laurel Schoolhouse on Shepard Street in East Milford was closed in 1951, the Milford Rotary Club took on a sponsorship role so that the Boy Scouts could use the schoolhouse building. (The Milford American Legion currently fills that role) Between 1960 and 1961, funds were raised by the Milford Rotary Club to create a modern baseball field. The new baseball park replaced a 1950's build softball diamond that had been in use. Work began in 1960 and the park was dedicated on June 25, 1961 in the name of longtime Rotarian and well respected community leader Hugo E. Trentini.

As noted in an issue of The Rotarian, Mr. Trentini was a staunch supporter of this initiative and many other local community betterment projects. More often then not he was in the thick of things attending to details which, in this case, ranged from fundraising to pouring the concrete. The primary fundraiser for the Little League Park was a hugely successful auction held on-site and called by Rotarian Ted Langdell (club president 1961-1962). Over the years, Milford Rotary has assisted with additional renovations and sign updates at Trentini Park.

As you probably know, a few years later a group of Milford Rotarians took on the challenge of studying Milford's need for a new pool. That grassroots effort eventually became what we know today as the Keyes Memorial Pool. Incidentally, Mr. Trentini, as Keyes trustee, was instrumental in this endeavor as well.
