We are joining with Share, the Souhegan Chamber of Commerce, the Boy's & Girl's Club, the Greater Nashua Workforce Housing Coalition and perhaps a couple more non-profits, to present "Communities & Consequences" to the community. It will count as a regular rotary meeting, and will supplant the lunch meeting that day.
Agenda is as follows:
5:15 - 5:45 Appetizers, beverages, networking
5:45 - 5:55 Introduction by Ben Frost of New Hampshire Housing Finance Agency
5:55 - 6:55 Viewing of film "Communities & Consequences"
6:55 - 7:30 Panel Discussion & Questions. Panel to include Dennis Nesbit, GNWHC President, Ben Frost, Bill Parker, Milford Community Development Director, and one player to be named. David Sturm will moderate the panel.
The program will trace the relationship between local zoning & tax policies, the cost (and lack of) workforce housing, the increase in the median age of the population of New Hampshire and its implications for the future. We hope to have 125 - 150 attendees.
"Communities & Consequences" by NH filmmaker Jay Childs, is a film about the human ecology of New Hampshire. It addresses the loss of New Hampshire's young people through the stories of people who are living out the consequences of demographic imbalance. Demographer Peter Francses travels throughout the state to talk to business owners, town officials, young professionals and active citizens about the causes and effects of a rapidly aging state. The film confronts and questions many long held myths that have heavily influences local development decisions, including those of explosive population growth, the aging of New Hampshire as simply a natural trend, and the belief that families with children will increase property taxes.
