Letters to our EFAC scholar - Can you help?
Thanks to the leadership of Jay Dinkel, Milford Rotary has been sponsoring a Kenyan student named Harrison Marubu Mwangi since 2010. Harrison is enrolled in the secondary education program operated by EDUCATION for All Children.
Some of you may recall that Nancy Van Sciver, EFAC’s founder, was a guest speaker in January 2010. EFAC believes in empowerment through education and is much more than just a scholarship program. As Nancy has stated, “EFAC combines not only scholarships but mentoring and global connections so that EFAC scholars not only are educated, but have the highest potential to hold good jobs and to become the leadership of their generation in Kenya.”
According to the EFAC website:
After eighth grade in Kenya, school is no longer free and is financially out of reach for roughly 60% of primary graduates. Within those forced to drop out of school are some of Kenya's brightest and most motivated students. Since 2008, EFAC scholarships have allowed over 200 of these students to continue their education.
Our commitment is four years of scholarships at a cost of $750 per year. By American standards, that seems like a miniscule amount for the equivalent of a high school education.
To make this sponsorship more meaningful for the Club and for Harrison, President John would like to see Club members corresponding with Harrison on a more regular basis. Could you take on writing a letter once or maybe even twice in 12 months? Perhaps you’d like to explain maple syrup production or pancake breakfasts to our Kenyan scholar or share a Thanksgiving message with him or tell him about the town you live in?
