Good food, good company and loads of laughter made for a fabulous afternoon on Wednesday October 6th when the Milford Rotary Club put on its 32nd annual Senior Citizens Chicken Barbeque. Area seniors were treated to a luncheon of the Club's "world famous" barbequed chicken with all the fixings including delicious brownies from Frederick's Pastries of Amherst. The Milford Rotary Club hosts this community service event each year to honor our older residents and neighbors from Amherst, Milford, Mont Vernon, Wilton, and Lyndeborough.

The first Milford Rotary Club sponsored Senior Citizens Chicken Barbeque was held on October 3, 1979, at Rotarian Fred Macone's house in Mont Vernon, and provided meals to 165 senior citizens and 48 Rotarians in the midst of falling snow! The inclement weather didn't stop Rotarian Ralph Talarico from entertaining the guests with his accordion playing and songs like "In the Good Old Summertime" as they sat around tables set-up in Fred's driveway.

This community event quickly out grew the Macone's yard and was moved to the Keyes Memorial Park in 1981. Since that time the barbeque has been held at the Knights of Columbus Hall (now the home of SHARE Outreach Inc.) and the American Stage Festival (now the Boys and Girls Club of Souhegan Valley). Thanks to the level of community support and cooperative effort that exists in the Souhegan Valley, the Milford Rotary Club has been able to continue this tradition for over three decades.

More recently, the barbeque has been held at the Boys and Girls Club of Souhegan Valley. According to Seth Zeigler, event chairperson, around 250 seniors attended this year. As Milford resident Doris Rebidue said "It was great!" and with 98 years of life experience she is well qualified to assess the event.

As the Milford Rotary Club celebrates its 60th anniversary as a service organization in the Souhegan Valley, club members remain committed to continuing this tradition of honoring our older neighbors with a luncheon. To take advantage of springtime weather, the 2011 Senior Citizens Chicken Barbeque will be held on Wednesday May 4th. As always the luncheon is free to local senior citizens and no reservations are required.
