What is this Initiative?
The Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup initiative is an effort that has grown from a District 7090 service project covering a small portion of Lake Ontario and Erie to a multi-district plan to focus Rotarians’ and citizens' attention to all 5 of the Great Lakes and streams and waterways feeding them.
The goal of this initiative is to make this the single largest cleanup event ever planned and coinciding with Earth Day 2022 on the Great Lakes Watershed.
The Rotary Clubs situated in West Niagara are coming together with several community organizations, Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln municipalities, Niagara Region and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and organizing a clean up event focusing on the Lake Ontario watershed.
The Great Lakes contain almost 20% of the world’s fresh water and is arguably the largest source of fresh water on the planet. It borders 8 states and 2 provinces and has 9,577 miles (15,323 kilometers) of shoreline. So far 15 Districts, 100’s of Clubs, and thousands of Rotary volunteers have agreed to participate. We will be joining over one billion people worldwide working on projects together in their communities on Earth Day.
Objectives
• Improve the aesthetics of the Great Lakes by removing garbage from public areas and roadsides.
• Reduce the amount of plastic and litter on our lands and in our waterways.
• Remove waste that could potentially be ingested by pets and other wildlife.
• Provide an opportunity for public participation in collaborative activities.
• Educate the public about the effects of littering, the importance of recycling, and to instill a sense of stewardship.
• Collect and report back to organizers cleanup metrics to track the impacts of all the cleanups.
There are 3 great ways to participate!
Be part of a community volunteer team. On Saturday, April 23rd between 9 am and 112 noon, help at one of the designated Cleanup zones already listed as needing a ‘spring cleaning’. Your team captain will supply you with a Cleanup Kit, location cleanup map, recognition sticker and some instructions. Sign-up here.
Create another Cleanup Zone. Pull together a small group of your neighbours and friends and decide to add another area or park close to your home to the list. We will then list your zone on the main list and provide supplies and information on how best to drop off the garbage collected. Create a Clean-up Zone.
Make April your cleanup month! As you walk or a hike locally, pick up the litter or garbage you may see (remember to wear gloves) and deposit it in your own garbage/recycling bins. Share some photos of the garbage you have collected tagging #GLWSCleanUpWN, or submit photos for use on the Rotary social media and website .
Where is the Grimsby & Area Cleanup happening?
Locally, the project includes six main zones with cleanup areas defined within each zone. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for one of the areas or create one of their own areas.
If you click on one of the links below, you can see a high-level map of the approximate boundary and labels of the surrounding features of the zones. Detailed maps of the specific cleanup areas will be provided to each cleanup team.
