A WORKSHOP TO ADDRESS THE PLIGHT OF THE HOMELESS
Instigated by senior member Gerry Greenway.
Deep thinking on the plight of Homelessness and how Rotary can become involved.
Gerry based his thoughts on The McGrath Foundation model, raising funds from sporting bodies and events.
A small but intelligent group of members met at 'The Goody Hotel' to workshop the idea!
ISSUES RAISED:
Getting funds for Homelessness through Rotary International, advertised at major sporting events.
Consider selling 'virtual' seats at sporting events to raise funds.
Rotary members could be at major sporting events raising funds.
Rotary International could have a new theme - what is Rotary International focusing on now? It could be an agenda item at a District Conference.
An attempt should be made to get all Clubs to discuss the issue.
Money raised would be spent Through Government Agencies.
Gerry will contact the new 'Member for Unley' - Alice Rolls, to seek her assistance.
Alan raised the point that homelessness is already covered by many charities (Salvos, Churches and The Smith Family etc.)
Peter raised doubts as homelessness is such a broad subject.
Direction from Rotary on a District/Australian/International level would be required!
The need for Community involvement encapsulates the dilemma.
Thanks Gerry, for provoking emotions about a massive problem that needs our urgent attention!
