Eastern Iowa Senior Olympics Volunteers:

THANK YOU for helping to make the Eastern Iowa Senior Olympics a success!  With over 700 event registrations, we could not have pulled off this event without your help.  Many of the athletes who participated commented on the great volunteers and how smoothly everything ran.  They were impressed that all the “orange shirts” were so helpful and pleasant!  We had a photographer taking pictures during the events and as soon as I get the pictures from her, you will be able to check them out on our website – www.agingservicesia.org

In the true spirit of the Olympics, the Rotary Clubs competed to see who could get the largest number of volunteers.  The winners were announced at the Opening Ceremony and medals were awarded to:

Gold – Cedar Rapids Metro North

            Silver – Cedar Rapids Downtown

            Bronze – Cedar Rapids West

Beyond being a fun way to encourage our seniors to stay active, the Eastern Iowa Senior Olympics was also a fund raiser for Aging Services, Inc.  The final numbers are not yet in but we are pleased with the outcome of the event.  Aging Services provides services to help seniors remain in their own homes in the community.  One of the programs of Aging Services is the Milestones in Marion Adult Day Health Center . The money raised through the Eastern Iowa Senior Olympics will be matched by The Hall Perrine Foundation and applied to the expansion of the Milestones in Marion .

Milestones provides a cheerful and nurturing environment, specifically designed to provide opportunities to challenged adults.  When elderly and other health challenged adults can no longer stay at home safely during the day, Milestones provides an affordable alternative to nursing home care or assisted living arrangements.

Aging Services has been providing Adult Day Health services in Cedar Rapids since 1984.  Based on a growing need for this service, Milestones in Marion opened in 2005 and now, a short five years later, is consistently operating at its daily capacity and referrals remain strong.  It is now time to expand the program to accommodate both current and anticipated future need for this service.  The expansion will not only allow us to serve more seniors and health challenged adults, but will also include the addition of a Special Care Unit.  This unit will be specifically designed to serve individuals with dementia and related brain disorders.  You can learn more about the Milestones program at our website – www.agingservicesia.org.

THANK YOU for volunteering for the Eastern Iowa Senior Olympics!  Your time and effort not only made for a great event but also will help seniors in our community get the services they need.
