Brain Injury Center

Club member Chrissy Stamegna is the Associate Executive Directory of the Brain Injury Center and will discuss the Center's work. She will be accompanied by Lisa Morris, a client who has beneffited from the Center's resources. On October 9, 2014 Lisa suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury. At the time, she was working for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. During her injury she lost all long term memory and had to learn everyday life skills all over again, including how to walk, talk, tie her shoes and everything else. She will discuss how the BIC has helped her. |

Sister City Loreto, Mexico

Carl Morehouse will discuss Ventura's sister city program with Loreto, Mexico. Carl served on the Ventura City Council for 17 years and served as Mayor 2005-2007. He is Past President of the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), with his one year term running from May 2014-May 2015. Carl represented the City of Ventura on the Ventura Council of Governments, the Ventura County Transportation Commission, and the Gold Coast Transit District, and he also was one of the two city representative seats on the Ventura County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO). Additionally, Carl served on the League of California Cities Board of Directors from 2012-2015, following his presidency of the Channel Counties (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties) Division in 2011, He served on the League’s Housing Community Economic Development Policy Committee from 2005 to 2016, serving as Chair of that committee in 2013. Carl is a Land Use Planner by training and worked for twenty years for the Ventura County Planning Division. In 2018, he was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Planners, the highest level of recognition that is within the American Planning Association. Today he is Chair of the Ventura Sister City Association.

Discussion of Luz by Debra Thomas. Alma Cruz wishes her willful teenage daughter, Luz, could know the truth about her past, but there are things Luz can never know about the journey Alma took to the US to find her missing father... Luz conveys, with compassion and insight, the plight of those desperate to cross the US border.
In anticipation of Debra Thomas's presentation at our February lunch meeting, the book club will discuss her novel Luz. All club members are welcome, even if you haven't read the book.

Debra Thomas is a Sarton Award winner for her debut novel, Luz. Her second novel, Josie and Vic, will be published April 2023. It is a story of love, loss, and forgiveness and conveys hope--even in the darkest of times . Originally from Binghamton, New York, she has lived in Southern California most of her adult life. After working a decade as a registered nurse, Debra returned to college to pursue her passion for literature and writing. She is a former English teacher at a Los Angeles public high school, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor to adults from all over the world. Her experiences as an immigrant rights advocate influence much of her writing. She currently lives with her husband and little dog in Simi Valley, California, just minutes away from her two horses. Dr. Cahill is a botanist with over 20 years of professional experience in a combination of botanic gardens, conservation non-profits and NGOs, compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the horticulture industry. He has contributed in a leadership capacity to the Ventura Botanical Gardens since 2008, first as a volunteer, then board member and now, our Executive Director. He holds a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of California Riverside and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in Manhattan and is an adjunct professor at California Lutheran University. |

Cecilia Ramirez Cid is a young entrepreneur who is the founder and owner of strwEATs. The company specializes in strawberry-based treats including strawberry tamales, cupcakes, jam, and more. Cecilia launched strwEATs as part of the Junior CEO program run by Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. The 6-week virtual course taught her about marketing, customer service, and money management. She won the award for “Most Profitable Business” in her cohort and was the 1st recipient of the Young Entrepreneur Award at the Pacific Coast Business Times Latino Awards in July 2022. She loves baking, spending time with her cousins and celebrating her family’s cultural traditions. Because it is the fifth Wednesday of the month, we will have a Social instead of a meeting. It will be a picnic at the Summit of the Ventura Botanical Gardens.

Driving directions from Poli to the Summit –
take Poli heading toward downtown, make a right on Kalorama (there is a sign to Grant Park), left on Summit, follow Summit until you reach Rotary Plaza (you will see Summit Drive and the Rotary Plaza on the map). There will be someone at the Rotary Plaza to direct you to parking.
There is limited parking at the Summit. We hope some will carpool from either the Poinsettia Pavilion or at the Merriweather Welcome Center behind City Hall.
If you would like to walk the gardens from the Welcome Center, Aaron Campbell will be there 11:15- 11:30 and accompany you to the Summit.
The abundance of rain has been a gift to the already beautiful gardens ~ you will be awed by the views! Hope you can join us!

Ventura DA Fraud Update

Andrew Reid is a Senior Attorney in the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office with over ten years of experience as a prosecutor. He specializes in fraud crimes such as workers’ compensation fraud, auto insurance fraud, and civil prosecutions such as consumer protection actions and environmental crimes. Mr. Reid’s accomplishments include securing a guilty verdict in a murder trial which resulted in a twenty years-to-life sentence against the defendant, and the successful prosecution and seizure of assets of a Ventura County firefighter committing workers’ compensation fraud. Mr. Reid lives in Ventura with his family. |

Ventura High School ASSETs Program

Laura Van Auker, M.Ed., BCBA, runs the Ventura High School ASSETs program (After School Student Education Teamwork for Success). It offers assistance with homework, snacks, and games, particularly assisting students who don't have immediate transportation home after school. Laura (she/her) has been an educator for the past 15 plus years. Laura started in education as a paraprofessional in special education and went on to obtain her Education Specialist Credential and Master’s in Education at the University of California Santa Barbara. Laura taught special education classes at Hueneme Unified School District and Ojai Unified School District before becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in 2015. She served as the Inclusion Specialist and Behavior Analyst at Ojai Unified School District. In these roles, Laura taught individual and group social skills lessons, provided behavioral consultation for school staff members, conducted complex assessments, and taught district-wide professional development trainings. She has experience working with students from three to twenty-two years in age. Laura became the ASSETs director at Ventura High School in August of 2022. She is committed to providing dynamic, inclusive enrichment opportunities for teens in the ASSETs program. As a high school educator, she strives to provide students with unique and meaningful opportunities while creating a safe and empathetic space for students to spend time after the school day. Laura enjoys biking, bodysurfing, swimming, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. |

Sheriff James “Jim” Fryhoff grew up in Pasadena, California. Jim was a police cadet with the Pasadena Police Department prior to moving to Ventura County. Jim relocated to Ventura County when he joined the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office in 1990.
Jim has worked a variety of assignments with the Sheriff’s Office, including detention services, patrol, special enforcement, investigations, and crime prevention. He also served as the Adjutant for two sitting Sheriffs. He was the Assistant Chief in Thousand Oaks, Chief of Police of Ojai and area Captain for the Ojai Valley, Thousand Oaks Chief of Police, and Operations Commander for Detention Services Division which oversees the Pre-Trial Detention Facility, Todd Road Jail, Court Services Bureau, Juvenile Justice Center, and the East Valley Courthouse and Jail.
In addition to Jim’s primary assignments listed, he has worked in numerous collateral assignments. Collateral assignments are duties that exist within the Sheriff’s Office but do not require a full-time position. It is through collateral assignments that Sheriff’s Office members can accomplish so much and give back to the agency and support their community. Jim was a bicycle patrol officer, air unit crew chief, press information officer, explorer advisor, reserve deputy coordinator, field training officer, and served as the manager for our peer support team.
Jim is married to his wife, Traci. They have two daughters, Vanessa and Savannah. Jim received his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University in Vocational Education with an emphasis on adult learning theory, a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in Administrative Leadership, and graduated from the FBI National Academy Session 261 in September of 2015. Jim is a two-time Deputy of the Year recipient and received the Medal of Valor in 1997.
Jim is excited to usher in a new energy to the Office of the Sheriff and is excited to lead the over 1300 employees and numerous volunteers within the Sheriff’s Office. |

Leading with a Coaching Mindset

Janny [yani] Franken will discuss Leading with a Coaching Mindset: Improving people's lives by guiding them into their preferred future through listening and asking empowering questions. Janny was born and raised in The Netherlands and worked in settings where she could use her observational and critical analysis strengths, advising parents and professionals on how to improve their ability to work with and raise children and youth with special needs. She has used her gifts in different settings while living in the U.S.A. In 2007, Janny was hired to improve a set of 3 Dutch Schools in Southern California. In 2012, she started working in a church to grow and improve their Children & Youth Ministries. Janny’s latest job accomplishment was to guide a congregation through the transition of becoming an official Reconciling in Christ - openly welcoming LGBTQ+ church. During COVID she trained for and became an executive coach. Janny is passionate about bringing improvement to organizations and guiding leaders through change, towards a desired future. Her best work is done through one-on-one coaching relationships. Janny has a Dutch Masters' degree in Educational Sciences and a Bachelor’s in Pedagogy.
