50 Years of Ocean Conservation and Stewardship with America's Underwater Parks

50 years ago, the U.S. ushered in a new era of ocean conservation by creating the National Marine Sanctuary System. Since then, we’ve grown into a nationwide network of 15 national marine sanctuaries and two marine national monuments that conserve more than 620,000 square miles of spectacular ocean and Great Lakes waters, an area nearly the size of Alaska. Claire Fackler has been working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 1999. Previous to that, she did contract work for the National Geographic Society in support of the Sustainable Seas Expeditions. For the past 19 years, she has worked as the National Education Liaison for the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. She works with various partners on national and regional educational programs that bring the ocean into America’s classrooms, as well as enhance public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the marine environment. The mission of the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries is to inspire ocean and climate literacy and conservation through national marine sanctuaries with a vision of an ocean-literate public making informed environmental decisions.
