Discovering Your Roots – It’s Never Been Easier!

Interest in genealogy has been a fast growing hobby since Alex Haley wrote his family history, “Roots” in 1977 and the subsequent TV series. The scanning of billions of records worldwide now allows people to discover ancestors in minutes on their home computers and smartphones. We’ll learn about the services the Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society (SBCGS) provides the community and how it can help you discover your ancestors. Dr. Basham will also trace the history of Santa Barbara scientist, Dr. Melville Sahyun and how his medical research laboratory became the Sahyun Genealogical Library in 1998 and now holds over 20,000 books.

Dr. Basham has been doing genealogy for 35 years and is the Community Outreach Speaker for SBCGS and Director of the Santa Barbara FamilySearch Center at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dr. Basham emphasizes the importance of telling family stories and how you can save yours for future generations.

Come early and congregate around the coffee pots. Santa Barbara Club Breakfast Buffet starts at 7:00 a.m. (Fresh fruit and baked breads, scrambled eggs, potatoes, and bacon!) Guest fee: $25.
