LA CUESTA STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Bryan Miranda was honored with the La Cuesta Student of the Month award for October 2016. The award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and personal achievement and who are nominated by their teachers.
Bryan came to La Cuesta earlier this year from Santa Barbara High School to catch up with credits so he can graduate on time. He has earned straight As and is on track to graduate in June 2017. He plans to attend SBCC and study health sciences. La Cuesta Counselor, Sarah Lawrence, states, "Bryan has taken advantage of many opportunities at La Cuesta. Not only is he a straight A student but he also is dedicated to helping out at school. He served as a greeter at Back to School Night and is excited about learning!"
Congratulations, Bryan!

On November 5 and 6, our annual work day will be held to make improvements at Camp Whittier. We plan to resurface and paint lines on the sports court and install new basketball goals.
Plan to put in a few hours of work in the company of your fellow Rotarians, enjoy lunch prepared by the Camp Whittier staff, and celebrate a great day's work with a barbecue dinner. This is a great opportunity to bring your family or a prospective member.
Are you aware of the responsibility or obligation most Rotarians fail to perform? Paying their dues? Attending meetings? Contributing to the club's service fund? Participating in club events and projects? No - none of these!
Of all the obligations a person accepts when joining a Rotary club, the one in which most Rotarians fail is "sharing Rotary." The policies of Rotary International clearly affirm that every individual Rotarian has an "obligation to share Rotary with others and to help extend Rotary through proposing qualified persons for Rotary club membership." It is estimated that less than 30 percent of the members of most Rotary clubs have ever made the effort to propose a new member. Thus, in every club, there are many Rotarians who readily accept the pleasures of being a Rotarian without ever sharing that privilege with another qualified individual. The Rotary policy on club membership states: "In order for a Rotary club to be fully relevant to its community and responsive to the needs of those in the community, it is important and necessary that the club include in its membership all fully qualified prospective members located within its territory."
Only a Rotarian may propose a customer, neighbor, client, supplier, executive, relative, business associate, professional or other qualified person to join a Rotary club. Have you accepted your obligation to share Rotary? The procedures are very simple, and everyone must know at least one person who should belong to Rotary.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 18
According to the Rotary Manual of Procedure, “RI and its member clubs must refrain from issuing partisan political statements.” While we don’t mix Rotary and politics, it is the duty of Rotarians around the world to take part in improving education, economic development, maternal and child health, water and sanitation, and peace and conflict resolution, many of the same issues of our local and national authorities. As we take to the polls next week, I wear my Rotary heart flag pin and am grateful for my privilege and right to vote to make our community and world a better place to live.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
