PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
November 2016

As we kickoff the holiday season with Thanksgiving, remember the humble beginnings from which our revered holiday was born.  It began as a harvest festival. The "First Thanksgiving" as we commonly refer to it, originated from the feast held in the autumn of 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag native American tribe to celebrate the colony's first successful harvest. What a different time that was. They were thankful for their harvest, a roof over their head, and walls around them to help protect against the approaching harsh winter. No electricity. No running water. An uncertain future.

As we reflect upon the challenges our forefathers faced, be thankful for their fortitude and sacrifices that in part helped to define our national character, establish our traditions, and create the foundation for a strong, compassionate nation. Let us have gratitude for the abundance we enjoy today.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
President Chris

DREAM VACATION RAFFLE WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

The winners of the Dream Vacation raffle drawing are Ed Fleming and Doris Dewton!

Past member, Ed Fleming, won the vacation package to Vail, Colorado. Ed has always been a terrific supporter of Sunrise Rotary and his support of our fundraiser was no exception.
Thank you Ed and congratulations!

Our second winner is Doris Dewton from Vail, Colorado. Doris has been friends with our esteemed member Jim Ruh for a number of years. She is well known to locals and is very active in many non-profits within the Vail Valley. She has never been to Santa Barbara and she’s very excited to visit during her Dream vacation.

Thanks to everyone that purchased raffle tickets and made an effort to market and sell tickets to family, friends, business colleagues, and clients. It is these contributions of time, talent, and treasure that helped our club fundraiser succeed thus enabling us to do the important humanitarian work in our local community and around the world.

DID YOU KNOW?

Vocational Service is the Second Avenue of Service. No aspect of Rotary is more closely related to each member than a personal commitment to represent one's vocation or occupation to fellow Rotarians, and to exemplify the characteristics of high ethical standards and the dignity of work. Programs of vocational service are those that seek to improve business relations while improving the quality of trades, industry, commerce and the professions. Rotarians understand that each person makes a valuable contribution to a better society through daily activities in a business or profession.

Vocational Service is frequently demonstrated by offering young people career guidance, occupational information and assistance in making vocational choices. Some clubs sponsor high school career conferences. Many recognize the dignity of employment by honouring exemplary service of individuals working in their communities. The 4-Way Test and other ethical and. laudable business philosophies are often promoted among young people entering the world of work. Vocational talks and discussion of business issues are also typical Vocational Service programs at most clubs.

Regardless of the ways in which Vocational Service is expressed, it is the banner by which Rotarians "recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations" and demonstrate a commitment to "high ethical standards in all businesses and professions." That's why the Second Avenue of Service is fundamental to every Rotary club.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 21

I received this Japan pin in a trade at an RI Convention several years ago. I bring it out this week because two years ago I made my first trip to Japan with my mother, sister, aunt, and friend. We had a wonderful time exploring Kyushu and Honshu during the peak of the autumn season. While the cherry blossoms were not in bloom (as shown on the pin), the leaves of the maple trees and ginkgo trees turned red and yellow in concert with stunning scenery at every turn.

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
