Selina Lopez was honored with the La Cuesta Student of the Month award for April 2017. The award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and personal achievement and who are nominated by their teachers.
Selina’s history teacher, Corey Adam stated, “Selina came to La Cuesta in January to catch up on credits. She has an impressive work ethic, is responsible, and has the admiration of staff.”
“Selina is everything we hope for at La Cuesta. As a mother of two, she has overcome issues, and does not let barriers stop her. She plans to return to Santa Barbara High School to graduate at the end of the year and further her education at SBCC,” added Kim Ortega, another of Selina’s teachers.

DG Nick expressed, “everyone in our District has lost a good friend who cared first and most about helping every Rotarian in the District for the past twenty-two years.”
Information with respect to memorial services or needs that can be provided by Rotarians in our district will be shared at a later date.
A card will be circulated at our next meeting so club members can express sympathies to the family. Individual cards may be sent to:

Please keep Nancy's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with these challenging times.
CONNARD'S PCT HIKE TO BENEFIT THE CLUB FOUNDATION
The call of the wild dictates the beginning of Connard’s (AKA Prim8, trail name) attempt to hike a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail, which in total runs some 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada as it meanders through California, Oregon and Washington mountain ranges.
Many individuals “through-hike” the entire trail in one long hike, taking perhaps five months. Prim8? Not so much at once. The first ~175 miles from the Mexican border to Idyllwild, CA, starting May 1 and completing within fourteen days, hopefully sooner, will serve to determine his ability to continue onward later.
Connard offers his endeavor as an opportunity for the RC of SB Sunrise to raise charitable funds for its club foundation. Connard has pledged to match funds raised by the club up to $1 per mile hiked. As Sandra O’Meara has volunteered to represent the club in this fundraising effort, please see her regarding your tax-deductible contributions to this effort, which will also encourage Prim8 as he sweats his way along the PCT.

BLESSED'S RYLA EXPERIENCE
This past weekend, more than 250 junior and senior high school students attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in Ojai. Our Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Blessed Emurese, and Brian Borgatello received scholarships from our club to attend. We will hear from Blessed and Brian at a future meeting but in the meantime, Blessed shares her experience:
"One of the best events I've attended. Did a lot of fun games with our teams to learn what teamwork is all about. Great speeches from incredible people. Life changing in terms of goal setting, teamwork, and public speaking. In general, it was wonderful!"

A DECADENT AFTERNOON!
Sunrisers and friends enjoyed a decadent afternoon in the kitchen of Chocolats du CaliBressan with Chocolatier Jean-Michel Carre. Chocolate lovers learned about the cocoa bean production, cocoa content, and the chocolate-making process, while sipping French champagne.
Thank you, Diana Washburn, for coordinating the outing!

DID YOU KNOW?
The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. The purpose of the scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Scholars are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country through both informal and formal appearances before Rotary and non-Rotary groups. Each scholar is assigned a host Rotarian counselor to facilitate involvement in Rotary and integration into the host culture.
In addition to being an investment in the education of tomorrow's leaders, Rotary Foundation scholarships create personal links between countries and are an important step toward greater understanding and goodwill in the world.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 43
I am wearing a Rotary shooting star pin this week as a symbol of the coming of change (new members, new corporate member program, and new service projects) as well as a symbol of endings (the passing of Nancy Falconer).
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
