A world of peace and goodwill comes closer to reality thanks to Rotarians like Eric Ryan who was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow +6. The Rotary Foundation is able to carry out an array of programs that achieve beneficial changes in our world: improved living conditions, increased food production, better education, wider availability of treatment and rehabilitation for sick and disabled, new channels for the flow of international understanding and brighter hopes for peace.
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
Thank you, Eric, for your generosity!

Old Spanish Days Fiesta is right around the corner and, once again, Group 8 will be producing a float for the Fiesta Historic Parade on Friday, August 5th at noon. This year's parade theme is Coastal Santa Barbara and our float will represent Stearns Wharf.
A great hands-on opportunity to work side-by-side with other Rotarians from Group 8 for fellowship and an opportunity to bring awareness to Rotary and the good things we do.
Volunteers needed to help with the float construction and decorating. All construction activities take place at the Carriage Museum, 129 Castillo Street.
Monday, August 1 (6-9pm) - Painting
Wednesday, August 3 (6-9pm) - Chicken wire
Thursday, August 4 (3-9pm) - Volunteers needed to help apply thousands of flowers to the float. All hands on deck for this family-friendly activity. Bring gloves, pruners, and friends!
Friday, August 5 (12 noon) - Join your fellow Sunrise Rotarians at the parade! We will set aside a spot along Cabrillo Blvd. on the beach side near Sambos. Bring chairs, sunscreen, and your Fiesta spirit!
Volunteers with building and construction experience are needed for framing. If qualified, please contact Walt Stephens at 455-6938. Sign up for volunteer shifts here.

In some areas of the world weekly Rotary club meetings begin with all members standing and reciting the Object of Rotary. This statement, which comes from the Constitution of Rotary, is frequently seen on a wall plaque in Rotarians' offices or places of business.
The Object of Rotary is "to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise." The statement then lists four areas by which this "ideal of service" is fostered: through the development of acquaintance as the opportunity for service; the promotion of high ethical standards in business and professions; through service in one's personal, business and community life; and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace.
The Object of Rotary has not always been expressed in this manner. The original Constitution of 1906 had three objects: promotion of business interests, promotion of good fellowship and the advancement of the best interests of the community. By 1910 Rotary had five Objects, as increased emphasis was given to expanding Rotary. By 1915 there were six Objects. In 1918 the Objects were rewritten again and reduced to four. Four years later they had again grown to six and were revised again in 1927.
Finally, at the 1935 Mexico City Convention the six Objects were restated and reduced to four. The last major change came in 1951 when the Objects were streamlined and changed to a single Object, which has four parts. The "ideal of service" is the key phrase in the Object of Rotary. This ideal is an attitude of being a thoughtful and helpful person in all of one's endeavours. That's what the Object truly means.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 3
The little gold bee pin pictured above was given to me by Club Rotario Celaya Nat-Tha-Hi Rotarian Beatriz Acevedo de Gasca. In 2006 several Sunrise Rotarians participated in a cataract eye clinic in Celaya, Mexico and were hosted by the all-female club and former club of our own LuzMaria Ortiz. I was home hosted by Beatriz. Even though she did not understand English and I did not speak Spanish, we managed to get to know each other. During our visit she took the Rotary pin off of her blouse and pinned it on me. What a wonderful momento of that special time and the power of Rotary to bring together people of diverse cultures and languages.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
