PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Chris Baxter, 2016-17 President

Our new Rotary International President John Germ chose Rotary Serving Humanity as his theme for 2016-17.  These words have impact.  They distill the essence of what it means to be a Rotarian down to three simple words.  As we kickoff the new Rotary year, I ask you to reflect back on your decision to become a Rotarian, what it has meant to you, and the wonderful opportunity you have this coming year to make a positive difference in the world!

Nick Frankle, our new District 5240 Governor, chose as our district theme this year If you can dream it…you can do it.  This too has impact.  When I first joined Rotary in 2001 one of the first things I learned was that Rotary is an enabling organization.  What do I mean by that?  If you have the passion to serve our local and/or international community, not only do you have the support of our club behind you, you have the support of the worldwide organization of Rotary behind you to support you in your efforts!

PRESIDENT BILL'S STEP DOWN

A presidential debate moderated by Megyn Kelly (Judith McCaffrey) and Anderson Cooper (Joe Weiland) was held on June 29th with candidates Hillary Clinton (Nancy Woods) and Donald Trump (Chris Baxter) vying for the position of President of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise. Cameo appearances were made by past Presidental hopefuls Bernie Sanders (Steve Barley) and Sarah Palin (Dana Goba), former President Bill Clinton (Dennis Johns), and new member Nancy Woods (Stuart Orenstein). The debate broke occasionally with live commercials from an Independent voter (Bob McPhillips), Apocalypse Now's Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (Joe Weiland), Mrs. Butterworth (Eric Ryan), and Playboy deodorant spokesman Bill Clinton (Dennis Johns).

The evening was emceed and organized by Past President Dana Goba and included entertainment by the Kule Klub with lead singer Jody Dolan Holehouse, Connard Hogan's Endo June, and Bill Abel's famous Lirty Dies. The evening was capped off with a presentation of a plaque to (now) Past President Bill Ringer and exchanging of the President's pin to Chris Baxter.

2016-17 THEME

RI President John F. Germ chose Rotary Serving Humanity as his theme for 2016-17. Noting Rotary’s unique ability to bring together committed professionals to achieve remarkable goals, Germ believes that “now is the time to capitalize on our success: as we complete the eradication of polio, and catapult Rotary forward to be an even greater force for good in the world.”
DID YOU KNOW?

A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association." A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.

This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE

I remember fondly the day 17 years ago when then President Judith Cook McCaffrey inducted me as a member of Rotary and put a Rotary pin on my lapel. I am very grateful for Judith’s sponsorship and friendship all these years. Since then I have been collecting pins at Rotary events, conferences, and conventions. I have a pin for every theme year I’ve been a Rotarian, traded them with others, and received pins as gifts from Rotarians. But, I only wore my pin weekly at Rotary meetings. Whenever I saw David Velarde, whether at a Rotary meeting or not, he wore a Rotary pin. David has inspired me to challenge myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary’s work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.

The flag pin pictured above is in honor of Independence Day. It is the newest pin in my collection. I purchased it at the Rotary International Convention in Korea.
