CAMP WHITTIER
Sunrisers made great progress renovating the sports court at Camp Whittier this weekend! Members and volunteers patched, primed, and applied a new surface coat to the sports court and prepared for installing new basketball goals. A final surface coat and lines will be painted during an upcoming work day. Campers at this United Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara County resident camp will enjoy the sports court for recreation such as basketball, tennis, badminton, four-square, and other games.
Funding for these upgrades were provided by the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation. Tom Heath is the project manager.
The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise has been making improvements to Camp Whittier for the past 20 years.

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING

Occasionally there is a temptation to criticize the laws, customs and traditions of another country that may seem strange or contrary to our own. In some instances illegal practices or customs of one nation are completely lawful and acceptable in another.
As members of an international organization dedicated to world understanding and peace, it behoves Rotarians to exercise restraint in judging our Rotary friends and citizens from other countries when their behavior seems unusual to us. A Rotary policy has existed for more than half a century relating to this dilemma of international relationships. The statement, adopted in 1933, says that because it is recognized that some activities and local customs may be legal and customary in some countries and not in others, Rotarians should be guided by this admonition of tolerance:
"Rotarians in all countries should recognize these facts and there should be a thoughtful avoidance of criticism of the laws and customs of one country by the Rotarians of another country." The policy also cautions against "any effort on the part of Rotarians of one country to interfere with the laws or customs of another country."
As we strive to strengthen the bonds of understanding, goodwill and friendship, these policies still provide good advice and guidance.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 19
This past week we had several opportunities for service to our community with honoring our La Cuesta Student of the Month lead by Chris Tucker, deliveries of dictionaries to third grade students in four schools lead by Dennis Johns, and making upgrades to the sports court at Camp Whittier lead by Tom Heath. Later this week we will have the opportunity to serve as volunteers at the Zone 25/26 Institute lead by LuzMaria Ortiz and beginning in December we’ll raise money at the red kettle for the Salvation Army lead by Bob McPhillips. I am inspired by my fellow Rotarians who are leading these efforts of service above self, and to everyone putting in the work to make our communities a better place to live.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
