Sunrisers stood the Salvation Army red kettle outside Nordstrom each Saturday in December.
Lt. Jeff Walters reported on the proceeds raised from the Sunrise kettle, "$1,702.12 is the total for the season. Your club is amazing!"
Funds support the Salvation Army Santa Barbara Corps which provides emergency and rehabilitation assistance, youth development services, food distribution, and community programs targeting families of all ages.
Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer and feed the kettle and to Bob McPhillips for organizing this community service activity!

BON VOYAGE, DENNIS AND VIRGINIA
Dennis and Virginia Johns came to Moby Dick on Thursday night for one last Sunrise happy hour before heading out to complete their circumnavigation around the world by sea. They will finish their 4-year journey with a final leg through the Caribbean to the Panama Canal. They'll meet up with Rotarians and friends along the way and return to Santa Barbara in 6 months.
It is with great sadness we report the passing of Heather Frankle. Heather was a member of the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise, and the wife of District Governor, Nick Frankle.
Heather passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday morning, December 23, 2016, after a four year fight with cancer.
The celebration of Heather’s life will be held Sunday, January 15, 2017, 10:00 am, at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 6150 Mount Sinai Road, Simi Valley, CA 93063.
A special fund has been set up for contributions for the continuation of Heather’s humanitarian work. Donations will be accepted at the Heather Frankle Project Fund, c/o the Simi Sunrise Charitable Foundation, P.O. Box 941101, Simi Valley, CA 93094-1101.
The Kule Klub performed Christmas carols at our meeting last week. Sunrisers enjoyed Mele Kalikimaka, Jingle Bells, and Feliz Navidad.
If you missed the meeting or wish for an encore performance, watch a short video on our club's Facebook page.

TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE
Tune into the Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, January 2, 2017 at 8:00 am and look for the Rotary float.
The 2017 Float promotes and celebrates the 100 years of The Rotary Foundation. The Foundation empowers Rotarians to travel throughout the world and create and complete projects which serve people in need in six areas of focus which are: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies. The spectacular and colorful dragon is clearly a world traveler carrying luggage decorated with the six symbols of the areas of focus. The Dragon also is proudly wearing a necklace with a medallion marked 100 for the 100 years of service.

District 5240
STEPS CONFERENCE
Steps to Eliminate Poverty Sustainably
Saturday, January 28, 2017
9 am - 3 pm
California Lutheran University
Thousand Oaks
Free for District 5240 Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors and their guests.
Join us at STEPS, where Rotarians from across the district and other nonprofit partners will meet and share projects for "doing good in the world." This inspiring day will give participants tools and connections for finding partners and planning successful humanitarian projects in communities all over the world. This year, STEPS will highlight the global concern for human trafficking by increasing awareness and describing ways for Rotary clubs to take action by supporting projects, programs and campaigns to help protect children and adults from human trafficking. Project exhibits are encouraged.
Some very significant programs of Rotary service are not conducted by Rotarians. This is true because of the many projects sponsored by organizations of Rotarians' wives and other women relatives associated with Rotary clubs around the world.
Women's groups − often called Women of Rotary, Rotary Ann Clubs, Las Damas de Rotary, Rotary Wives or, the more formalized organization, The Inner Wheel− annually conduct hundreds of notable projects of humanitarian service in their communities. The women's groups establish schools, baby clinics, food and clothing distribution centers, hospital facilities, orphanages, homes for the elderly and other service activities, and they frequently provide volunteer service on a day-to-day basis to operate childcare centers for working mothers and provide necessary resources for Youth Exchange students. Usually the women's groups complement and supplement the programs of service performed by the local Rotary clubs. Many of the women's groups actively conduct international service projects as well as local projects.
The Rl Board of Directors in 1984 recognized the excellent service and fellowship of the clubs and organization of women relatives of Rotarians, and encouraged all Rotary clubs to sponsor such informal organizations.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 26
During this holiday season I find it a time to reflect and extend wishes of peace and goodwill. I pulled this pin from my collection from LuzMaria as a reminder that peace is possible when we determine to be responsible for our attitudes, embrace humility, accept disagreement, and to live with gratitude.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
