FAREWELL, ANDY FAIRBAIRN!

On his final day in Santa Barbara before returning to his home country of Argentina, Andy Fairbairn visited our club one last time. Andy, our Rotary Youth Exchange student from Argentina, said, "Thank you for everything you've done for me this year." He recently returned from a 33-day cross country train trip with other Youth Exchange students that took him from Los Angeles to Seattle, Minneapolis, Boston, New York, New Orleans, and back. Andy's host mother Judith presented him with a card and gift from the club, a photo book of memories from his year with us.

Thank you to the Rotary families who home hosted Andy this year. They include: Susan Klein-Rothschild and Dan Rothschild, LuzMaria Ortiz and E. Russell Smith, and Judith and Paul McCaffrey. And thank you, Scott Burns, our longtime Youth Exchange Chair.

NANCY WOODS EARNS HER BLUE BADGE

Nancy Woods was inducted as a member on April 13, 2016. As a new member, Nancy received a red badge and was required to complete a new member assignment sheet to earn her permanent blue badge. Tasks included are specifically designed to expose new members to many aspects of Rotary and to familiarize them with as many club members as possible. Just like her sponsor Judith and mentor Joanne, Nancy is a hard worker with great ideas - and has a witty sense of humor! Nancy was quick to get involved by participating in President Bill's step down and serving as this year's Public Relations Chair. Thank you and congratulations, Nancy!

WHAT HAPPENS AT LADIES NIGHT OUT, STAYS AT LADIES NIGHT OUT

Sunrise Rotary ladies enjoyed an evening at the Mesa home of Kathy Scroggs. Kathy provided a delicious homemade Santa Maria style barbecue and a beautiful ocean view. The evening was capped off with a stunning moonrise over the ocean.

What happens at Ladies Night Out, stays at Ladies Night Out but we did capture a few photos here.

Thank you to all who came, brought food, and shared in lively conversation, and to Kathy for sharing her lovely home!

SUNRISERS ENJOY CLASSIC ROCK IN THE PARK

Sunrise Rotarians and friends enjoyed a great night of 70 classic rock with Queen Nation at Chase Palm Park. It was a perfect warm evening with close to record-breaking crowds in the park. Thank you Sunriser Judith and hubby Paul for getting to the park early and setting up a prime location. Join the fun at the last concert of the season on Thursday, July 28th with The Tearaways. Our happy hours have never been happier!

2017 ROTARY ROSE PARADE FLOAT DESIGN ANNOUNCED

The Rotary International Rose Parade Float theme is the same as the Rotary Foundation Centennial Celebration theme, Doing Good in the World, and the float will be commemorating the year of celebration. The design is a world traveling dragon (colorful and whimsical to attract TV and crowd attention) and carrying luggage bearing the six symbols of the areas of focus which honors the Rotarians who do travel the world doing service within the six areas. The Dragon will also wear a 100 year medallion.

Save the date for a special holiday dinner with RI President John Germ and celebrating the start of the 100 year anniversary of The Rotary Foundation. The event will be Friday, December 30, 2016 at University Club of Pasadena. $100 per person.

Stay tuned for information about the date for a volunteer opportunity to work on the float in late-December before the Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2017.
GROUP 8 FIESTA FLOAT

Old Spanish Days Fiesta is right around the corner and, once again, Group 8 will be producing a float for the Fiesta Historic Parade on Friday, August 5th at noon. This year's parade theme is Coastal Santa Barbara and our float will represent Stearns Wharf.

A great hands-on opportunity to work side-by-side with other Rotarians from Group 8 for fellowship and an opportunity to bring awareness to Rotary and the good things we do.

Volunteers needed to help with the float construction and decorating. All construction activities take place at the Carriage Museum, 129 Castillo Street.

Monday, August 1 (6-9pm) - Painting

Wednesday, August 3 (6-9pm) - Chicken wire

Thursday, August 4 (3-9pm) - Volunteers needed to help apply thousands of flowers to the float. All hands on deck for this family-friendly activity. Bring gloves, pruners, and friends!

Friday, August 5 (12 noon) - Join your fellow Sunrise Rotarians at the parade! We will set aside a spot along Cabrillo Blvd. on the beach side near Sambos. Bring chairs, sunscreen, and your Fiesta spirit!

Volunteers with building and construction experience are needed for framing. If qualified, please contact Walt Stephens at 455-6938. Sign up for volunteer shifts here.

DID YOU KNOW?

The first motto of Rotary International, He Profits Most Who Serves Best, was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, USA in August 1911. The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon (pictured above), who made a speech in 1910 which included the remark, "He profits most who serves his fellows best." At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, commented that the proper way to organize a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted: Service, Not Self. These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved to be the official mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 Convention in Detroit: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. In 2004 the secondary motto was changed to They Profit Most Who Serve Best.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 4

Walt Stephens, RC Goleta Noontime, gave me this pin when he visited our club last week. Walt is the Chair of the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee. Read about the float design in the article above. The Rose Parade is viewed by over 8 million people so it is an effective marketing effort to share the good work of Rotary. I have had many wonderful memories working on the Rotary Rose Parade float with Sunrise Rotarians and other Rotarians from our District. I hope that many of us will sign up to volunteer to work on this year's float. The date will be announced soon.

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
