PASSING OF PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR, NILO FANUCCHI

Past District Governor Nilo Fanucchi passed away on December 10, 2016.  He was a member of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria and served District 5240 as Governor in Rotary Year 1985-86.

Nilo moved to Carpinteria from Chicago 55 years ago. He was the commentator at many Carpinteria events including the Holiday Spirit Parade. His commentating tenure began in the mid-1970s when he filled in as a sports announcer for an under-the-weather John Biachin. That gig parlayed into four decades of entertaining locals with fun and informative facts at local events.

His community involvement goes back even further, starting with a volunteer position as a Sunday school teacher. In addition to his involvement in Rotary, he served on the city’s incorporation committee, and on myriad boards and committees for the Lions Club as well as the Parks and Recreation Board, Architectural Review Board, Salvation Army Board, Carpinteria Community Theater, Fire Board, Museum Board, coaching both girls softball and boys baseball, teaching woodworking to Carpinteria High School students and providing AIDS education to thousands.

Services have not been announced and will be held in January. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

DID YOU KNOW?

In much of the official literature of Rotary International relating to service to young people, a special slogan will be found - "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth." These words were adopted in 1949 by the Rotary International Board of Directors as an expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which Rotary clubs exist. Serving young people has long been an important part of the Rotary program.

Youth service projects take many forms around the world. Rotarians sponsor Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, athletic teams, centers for disabled children, school safety patrols, summer camps, recreation areas, safe driving clinics, county fairs, child care centers and children's hospitals. Many clubs provide vocational counseling, establish youth employment programs and promote use of The 4-Way Test. Increasingly, drug and alcohol abuse prevention and AIDS awareness projects are being supported by Rotarians.

In every instance, Rotarians have an opportunity to be role models for the young men and women of their community. One learns to serve by observing others. As our youth grow to become adult leaders, it is hoped each will achieve that same desire and spirit serve future generations of children and youth.

The slogan accepted over 40 years ago is just as vital today. It is a very thoughtful challenge - "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth."

This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 24

One of the stranger pins in my collection is this frog Rotary pin. I'm not sure when I received this pin or from whom. I pulled out this pin from my collection, as I have done with the two dozen prior, I try to recall the details of who gave it to me or what meaning it has. It is kind of like decorating our Christmas tree. As we pull ornaments out of their wrappings and hang them on the tree, I often wonder where we got the ornament or when.

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
