HAPPY 112th BIRTHDAY, ROTARY!

For 112 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world.

It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.

Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.

“Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”
Paul Harris, Rotary founder
OFF SITE MEETING AT DIRECT RELIEF

Our offsite meeting was held at Direct Relief last week. Direct Relief President and CEO Thomas Tighe shared the history of the organization and its recent relief efforts around the world. Thomas Tighe and Dean Axelrod, Assistant Director, Partnerships and Philanthropy, treated us to a behind the scenes tour of the warehouse.

Founded in 1948, Direct Relief is California's largest international humanitarian nonprofit organization. The organization provides medical assistance to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty and disaster, both in the United States and throughout the world.

THANK YOU, BOBBIE AND JIM RUH!

Blessed recently returned from a week with the Ruhs. First, she spent three days in New Mexico with Bobbie and Klara (the exchange student sponsored by Bobbie's club from the Czech Republic who is living with them for two months). Then Blessed skied four straight days in Vail. Jim writes, “I gave her a lesson the first day, but the last three days I've been booked with private lessons through ski school so Bobbie has been skiing with her.  She is doing amazingly well and really likes skiing. Today an off duty ski instructor skied a few runs with them and rated Blessed as a Level 5 skier, which is excellent for her 4th day on the snow!”

Club members, if anyone is going skiing the rest of the ski season, please consider taking Blessed with you.

Thank you, Bobbie and Jim Ruh for hosting Blessed for this wonderful experience of a lifetime. And, thank you to all the club members who contributed toward Blessed’s airefare.

DID YOU KNOW?

An interesting Rotary program of fellowship is the Rotary Friendship Exchange. This activity, originally recommended by the New Horizons Committee in 1981, is intended to encourage Rotarians and spouses to visit with Rotarian families in other parts of the world. It may be conducted on a club-to-club or district-to-district basis.

The idea is for several Rotarian couples to travel to another country on the Rotary Friendship Exchange. Later the hospitality is reversed when the visit is reciprocated. After a successful pilot experiment, the Rotary Friendship Exchange has become a permanent program of Rotary.

Rotarians seeking an unusual vacation and fellowship experience should learn more about the Rotary Friendship Exchange . Some unusual Rotary adventures are awaiting you!

This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 34

As we celebrate Rotary’s 112th birthday this week, I am reminded of the very large celebration twelve years ago for Rotary’s centennial. Rotary International President Glenn E. Estess, Sr., 2004-05, asked club’s to Celebrate Rotary by completing a Centennial Community Project to fulfill some significant community need. Our club contributed to the occasion by developing the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Centennial Picnic Area at Elings Park. It was a multi-year project to develop and we have continued to maintain the property for the public to enjoy.

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
